Break in problems

I'm a new owner still going through my break in period and I was wondering what kind of problems could you experience from not following the break in period? I'm asking not because I'm not following it but because the dealer neglected to tell me about it and when he was driving us around (not in the vehicle I actually bought, thank God), he was redlining every gear. That got me wondering what kind of problems that car can have due to the fact that it only had 100 miles on it. So should this break in be followed to a "T" or is just a basic guideline. It also makes me wonder how my vehicle was driven during its first 25 miles before I owned it....
