60 Engines blown in RX-8?

I was at the local auto-x this weekend when I told a guy that I had an intrest in the car. His wife stated that they have had 60 blown engines. I asked where he got this info but he never stated. This is the first that I have heard of this, but I think that it is a baseless rumor.

That number (60 replacedengines, NOT blown engines) is an estimate that was talked about in spring, based on the number of engines Mazda stocked for that purpose and their availability. There were some engines replaced that had coolant leak problems, or possible seal or rotor problems. Rather than repair engine problems, Mazda wanted any engines with issues to be sent, complete, back to Japan for analysis, so they were replacing engines that would normally have just been serviced/repaired.

So, yes, 60 RX-8 engines out of about 30,000 were replaced - many that didn't need to be, but were for Mazda's analysis purposes. You can calculate the percentage - it's very small, and normal!

Regards,
Gordon

nazgul and rotten, you both blew your chance (so to speak.) If you were like 98% of the other posters, you woulda said, "Hey, I blew an engine (or I heard of someone who did) so we're all gonna have blown engines pretty soon!"

Then you coulda told us to write to Mazda and complain to dealers, and uncover their dark hidden secret. Man, you blew your chance...

I need an 8 to begin with. Maybe if I blow the maxima's engine they will put the 8's in..probably not!

I just thought that sounded a little out of place about that many being blown. like i said probably a rumor.

Makes sence to see what is wrong with the engine to help futher the cause. :D

60, schmixty. Even if true (which I doubt), out of what, how many? 30 THOUSAND, at LEAST? Or is it closer to 50 thousand by now? I won't even bother looking for the latest sales figures. . . . . let's see . . . . barely over 1 in ten thousand sounds pretty good. Can you get genetics that approach that, particularly when you consider those who simply eat their young and never put a drop of oil or any other TLC into it?

My nose hurts, too, from the smell.

I have seen a clip where a dude cut his rev limiter of his FC and rev it to the max... and still took 2 minutes to kill the engine.

Remember that link? The engine was on fire... and they still want to start it afterwards?.... That was a LONG.... time ago

even if it was 60 engines out of 30,000 RXs, doesn't that work out to something like 0.002% ? If so, I don't think that's anything to get your panties in a bunch about.

Close...it's .002, which is .2%

You think this sounds like a lot...go check out the S2K forums. At least Mazda is actually replacing the engines. Honda seems to be hit and miss as to which one's will be replaced at their expense. Most people get diagnosed as a misshift...whether it was or not.

I talked to a guy at work and we also figured it was less than 1% of the cars which is good odds.
