A second thought - did you rent the 3 cars from the same dealer that fixed your 8 - if so it may be a chemical rather than a biological mess - Dealer may have used an ammonia based window cleaner that ran down into the air intakes....
If so ammonia can be neutralized - but I can't remember how, but there is a way - you need to talk to a better chemist -
However, pet shops often have products to remove ammonia pet smells and also remove ammonia from fish tanks - You might check these out - but only if all 4 cars were from the same dealer....

Cars from different sources reduce the probability of the Windex theory and indicate more possibility of a biological source -did you drive them along the same route where they could pick up something from the outside - say a farm area where fish emulsion is being used as a fertilizer, or a cannery, or food processing facility?

Frigi-Fresh rocks... this stuff is awesome. Got some Frigi-Clean too which is the foamer cleaner and used that first which cleaned out the housing. Then blasted it with Firig-Fresh. Only found it online here http://www.ac-evaporator-cleaner.com
