I know you're probably joking......but some might actually try this. So here is some insider info....I don't know about Japanese cars, but domestic cars have had a special gas filler tube design since the early 90's to prevent someone from syphoning gas from your tank. It actually requires a very specially shaped tool to get past the ball valve and extreme curve of the hose.....and even with the tool it's extremely difficult.

The problems with that are:

1) There are only about 600 natural gas stations in the US
1a. Filling up at home is not an option for most city and apartment dwellers.
1b. It is useless for long trips, due to range and lack of fuel availability.

2) You only get about 220 miles per tank (see #1)

3) The cost of the vehicle isn't justified to merely save $ on gas. It would have to replace your 8.

4) Natural Gas prices tend to go up (sometimes dramatically) in the winter.

5) Any significant increase in CNG vehicle usage will drive the price up far enough to make the car lose any advantages it has.

Now a hybrid version would be a good idea, and I'm sure Honda will get there in the next year or so. Range could be extended greatly for city drivers. Highway practicality would still be very low. In the end, this is still a stop-gap measure. Hydrogen or ethanol combined with hybrid (non-gasoline) technology will be true freedom from oil. Btw GM and Ford have had CNG fleet vehicles (mostly trucks and vans) out there for several years.

I ignore gas prices. There's nothing I can do about them. No reason to stress over it. They go up in the summer, if for no other reason than they have always gone up. Billions upon billions of dollars in profit allows for alot of lobbying power to keep the politicians in line for big oil. Clean up congress and the "new" technologies (that have been around for years) will come to market much quicker.

I took into account the mpg when I bought it but I did not factor in a huge spike in prices and don't have a warm fuzzy about it going down. If it stays at 3-3.50 here i can work with that. Anything higher i will have to change my lifesyle. I'm thinking of a motorbike for around town and moving closer to work.

How much of that is Tax? About 1/4 to a 1/3 of the price here is tax. We have heard of how the price of gasoline is higher in Canada and Europe. But I also know you generally pay more in taxes for everything.

Regardless the price of gas is noticed almost every where in the world, not just the US as it seems some people believe. Crude oil prices are high all around and for more reasons that just the war, the demand itself including that from China is ever increasing.


I'm not going to stop driving the 8 but looking at getting a Chevy Aveo which gets like 30-40mpg to drive to work. New ones can be had at under 6k and at 1 point they were giving them away for free when you bought a Chevy SUV Well that and putting over 800 miles a week on the Rx8 is just killing me..my poor baby is getting old super quick.

In England, they put a tax on the taxes! It's retarded! Thankfully enough I'm military, so I can get gas on base (I know it's not the best, but it sure beats $7 a gallon). I don't see how English people afford it.

$90 to fill up an RX-8 in London! that is freakin insane. It has to balance out somewhere. They must receive a lot of government benefits or else they'd be on the news crying.

While I would love to go back to the days of 99 cents a gallon gas, all I need my RX-8 to do (as far as fuel is concerned) to keep me happy is get me from one gas station to the next. It is worth the extra $$ in gas to drive the car.

On average in the US, 27% of the cost of gasoline is taxes. In the UK, it's 75%.

I always get gas at the Chevron on Beavercreek Road since I have to drive past it to get pretty much anywhere from my house and they are always usually at least 3 cents cheaper than elsewhere. I know the gas stations near where I work downtown (at Legacy Good Samaritan on NW 22nd) the station I pass just before I go over the bridge and the one on the corner of 21st and Lovejoy had been consistently 20 cents higher than where I get gas. At least with the new job they told me I should be able to start in a few weeks, it is on the way home from the other job so I will only be adding in a few extra miles a day to get there.

In the fall there were reports of people in Gresham and Troudale (around the Portland area) having their gas lines cut or ripped from their cars so their gas could be stolen

I drove up to Seattle yesterday and end up paying $3.19 for gas in Washington. At 13 gallons I paid $42. I guess it's okay since I got 23.5 MPG.

Do you have public transportation in Sydney? I think the reason most of the compaining is coming from the U.S. is because very few areas in the U.S. have any type of mass public transportation. Most people in other countries pay the high fuel costs because they choose to. We pay them because we have no other choice. If I had the option, I would absolutely use public transportation when gas starts going up. As a matter of fact, that would naturally drive prices down if a majority of people started using it here. The oil companies and the government try to make us feel better about our gas prices here by telling us how much it costs in other countries. But it is really comparing apples and oranges. We are not in the same boat as most other developed countries.

One news report I heard tonight put the highest price found today was in Brooklyn, NY. One station there had regular unleaded at 4.14.
