The switches are more complex, and there's the matter of the sensor, as someone mentioned above, so it's not a simple add on. VWs, for the record, have notoriously buggy window motors, and they all have auto-up (you can even close the windows from their remote, but I haven't figured it out on ours).

It's not really a big deal, but having one car with auto-up and another without can be confusing. What's more irritating is that the RX-8 is more expensive than the VW we have...

I had a 1999 VW GTI VR6 and I had to replace both window motors within 2 years. I'd rather not have auto-up and have working windows instead.

Word! For Windows. Lol.

and even then sometimes they didn't want to work! Lol. I can't comprehend how holding down a button for 2 seconds is considered too much to "put up with".

Um... my 8 has auto up and down. Have I missed something, or is this something your American 8's don't have as well?

So now us UK 8-ers have clear corners, headlight washers, auto up windows all as standard. Man, Mazda must hate Americans!

I wish you could get manual windows still.

You know, it doesn't really get in the way - I've never had problems with it, anyway. I think I prefer it closer to me - less distance to reach!

The only problem I've encountered with it was when I was driving it round a race track. Sometimes, when going round a right-hand bend, the red parking brake light would come on. It worried me for a bit, until I realised my leg was pushing against the handle around the bend, just enough to make the light come on!

I was reading the shop manual (the one that's available online for the 2003) and the power window section has descriptions and procedures for checking an auto-up operation and auto-reverse ability. The motor assembly uses hall-effect sensors to detect direction of motion and operation. For all we know, most of the parts may already be there and may just take reprogramming and a different switch. There may be needed a position sensor for the safety controls, if it's not already there. I think it would be nice to have auto-up, but those windows are really quite fast and I don't have a problem with them. Those overhead switches really need to be lighted though (I've seen the threads for that), and the little left-side change compartment.

Not only that, but you guys also do have automatic climate control (in the USA it's manual only), plus you can get the GT package independent of the damned sunroof.
On the other hand, you don't get cruise control if I'm not mistaken

This is interesting, the car has been out for > 2 years, and we are still finding differences in the RX-8 between markets. I would've thought such info readily/easily available??

Thanks!

All depends on how long you've been following the RX8 and this forum. Nothing mentioned in this thread is new information.

Oh, sorry, i was under the impression that when moderator, "zoom44" posted that the 2006 RX-8 may get 'auto up windows, etc.', and the following 28 posts were devising ways to 'retrofit' the existing RX-8's that this feature was newly found out. If this is old news on the forum can someone link me to some of those old posts? My searching skills on this subject do not rock

Kindly re-read what zoom wrote:

Auto down and UP windows!!

Well not confirmed on the RX-8 yet but the Mazdaspeed6 will have them. auto up and down with a anti pinch feature of course and Remote open

He is speaking about the Mazdaspeed 6, not the 8

As far as retro fitting the feature to the 8, there are posts from way back talking about adding the feature with aftermarket security systems. When you search be sure to set the time back 2 or 3 years.

Right on all counts. I have pretty much all the options, bar the sunroof. I doubt I'd actually fit in the '8 if it had that.

You used to be able to get cruise control on UK 8's by importing the switches etc from the US, but I think a flash disabled them a while back.
