ok, this is aimed at the people with the auto dimming mirror and window tinting.

i had my first experience withan auto-dimming mirror this past weekend in a rental, and i was curious how window tinitng affects this feature.

what are your experiences? does it still dim when someone approaches you, or does it not get affected due to the tint (i realize that this is affected by the % of the tint used)?

it won't dim as much as a car without window tinting but it still does. Anyway the total effect is still the same since the tint already dimmed the lights before the mirror does. It's still a great feature because it protects your eyes from somebody flashing you at night and from high vehicles.

 

Mine works fine and I have 15% on the back window.

 

so if the lights are bright enough, the mirror will dim still, just not as much. ok, thats what i was looking for. thanks

 

I have tint and it still works. Auto dimming mirrors should be standard in all cars. It's hard to drive at night without one after owning a car with it.

 

i have 20% and mine still dim.....i love it!

 

Yes. The overall result is still the same, it's just that the tint takes care of some of it. (I have 17% on mine, and don't even need the dimmer unless I'm being followed by an SUV or a vehicle with HIDs)

 

i completely agree after experiencing it this weekend. was so easy on the eyes. especially since newer cars have REALLY bright low-beams and my eyes are sensitive to light

 

yeah, thats why i got tinting on my previous car. i dont like the way i sat and as soon as i looked up i would see lights of SUVs

 

the auto dimming doesn't really work to well with a spoiler on the 8. you can move the mirror up which helps, but i find it doesn't dim sometimes which can be annoying. and I've never figured out how to manual dim the mirror either

The rearview mirror pivots at both ends so you can position it in a way that it maximizes light pickup from behind.

 

Yea, I agree. I've got my mirror all the way up as high as it will go and the spoiler seems to block some of the headlight glare coming in the rear window. The mirror seems to dim about 50% of the time. My rear window has 35% light emittence. I wish there was a way to keep it in the dim (green) mode all the time at night. Sounds like a good DIY! I had a Lexus RX-300 a few years ago that worked much better. Even the side view mirrors had the green tint. The rear window in the Lexus was already tinted from the factory.

 

Same here. I've got 15% all around and no issues with the auto-dim at all.
