Seems like 19 mpg no matter how I drive. Around 270 miles when light comes on like clock work 99% city driving.

I'm usually at around 330-350 miles when I fill up. It's an automatic, higher geared, so it gets better fuel consumption in highway driving.

16 mpg, all around town, steady as clockwork for me. Certainly does better on the highway, but the wife uses it only around town.

Your not driving hard enough.

If you keep RPMs below 3k then why own a RX-8. Go get a Jetta TDI. Just saying.

Now go rev that 8!

He just put 15K miles on the car in 9 mo. I would consider that hard driving. A comparison of gas mileage doesn't mean that is a persons primary consideration when they buy and drive a car.

Since you don't drive with me, you have no way of knowing that my car gets revved regularly, which I regard as part of normal maintenance for these motors. And, since it is an A/T which tends to hold the revs lower than might be healthy, I usually use the paddle shifters and shift at RPMs that I would normally shift a manual transmission.

A lot of my driving is highway commuting during the week, and long-distance trips out of town on the weekends. With the A/T's tall gearing, in order to maintain over 3,000 RPM in 6th gear on the highway, I would have to drive over 90 mph. Not very practical, and I'm certainly not going to cruise in 4th gear all the time just to satisfy someone else's personal notion of what's good for the motor. I specifically bought the A/T version because it is more relaxed & quieter for long distance/high-speed cruising, and is a bit more fuel efficient.

Along with all the usually stated reasons we read about, I own the RX-8 because I've loved the concept of the Wankel motor since I was a kid, I regarded the car's design as an instant & unique classic, Mazda's continued support and development of the rotary motor is heroic and historic, the car fits me like a comfortable old glove, and there is just nothing else like it on the market.

And that is why I don't own a Jetta TDI. Just sayin' ...

(40,000 miles this week, by the way)

Hey hey now. No need to be so defensive. Was just making a simple comment. As an owner of both an A/T and stick shift I know the benefits of both. It is a great cruising car and I actually applaud you for getting one for road trips despite the less than class leading fuel economy. Maybe there's still hope for California yet lol.

I drive about 3-4k miles a month so it won't take me long to each 40k miles. Mines a DD with a 110 mile daily commute. I'm getting decent mileage 21 with a 70/30 split of highway to city. I drive her pretty hard in the city.

One question - what grade of oil are you using? 5W-20?

You have an 08 R3? Purchased a 09 MY in 08?

Also CWP so I'm assuming you are in Canada. I love my CWP GT. What does it look like with R3 wheels? Post some pics please!

10W-40 for hotter season, 5W-30 for colder season, Itemitsu 4-6 oz premix per fill-up.
