Air Properties

Learning about the properties of gases and the different laws or whatnot...most important the gas pressure laws and properties. at sea level (1 atmosphere) air pressure is 760mm Hg=1 atmosphere=14.7psi. So for u guys that live in places higher than sea level, where the air pressure is lower (less dense=less O2) does that mean ur cars are slower and less efficient? lower temperatures also make air more dense...so colder climate=better performance??? how many degrees can an intercooler decrease the temperature??? I also read that oxygen makes cars more efficient because it burns the gas better...so FI does make cars more efficient and better for the environment correct?

Yes, N/a cars could be most powerful at or below sea level because of density. Problem is the stock ECU & MAF even out everything to get a consistent burn at all pressures & temps so you need a system that will let you manually tune the values for air and fuel in order to fully take advantage of different locations

Yeah FI is essentially creating your own atmosphere.

Instead of an intercooler a Cold air intake is more effective for a N/A car.

Yea FI and nitrous make cars more efficient.

great info thanx...wow I didnt know cars have their own barometers thats amazing. So like u say...u cant really take advantage of better climate because of the maf...isnt there something that can be done to take advantage of it??? Im sure it would be too much for little gains but I'm always asking these questions...Wish I had cash to turbo my car and play with it its all so interesting u guys that have it are lucky man..

Yup, any standalone tuning system will work. Right now the best option for the RX8 is Mazdamaniac's accessport since its just a 5 minute plug and play ordeal.

However there are systems available that give you full control.

Air pressure can vary at any elevation due to weather, sometimes by 10% or more (this is why pilots have to constantly re-calibrate their altimeters), so there's one more variable, also with higher altitude, there is less air for the engine to work with but staticlag has correctly pointed out that the engine adjusts. Air resistance (drag) is lower as well, but not by enough to be noticeable without proper instrumentation.

altitude affects turbo cars as well, the compressed air is less dense. Put it this way 20psi from a small mitsubishi 14b is way less air than 20psi from a larger mitsu 20g turbo even though your boost gauge says 20psi for both believe me there is a huge differance in airflow, temperature factors in this as a big turbo pushes cooler air but the flow charts for a 14b say 375cfm @ 15psi for a 14b vs. 600cfm @ 15psi for a much larger 20g. Personally I lost .3-.4 seconds in my Talon thru the quarter moving to PA (mountains) racing at Numedia spdwy vs. ATCO raceway which is at sea level in NJ.
