i go over the stock redline everyday on purpose- dont worry about it
zephyrzone- get a clear space and run the car in first gear(or 2nd ifthe speed limit permits) until the fuel cuts. it will feel like you snagged a hook with your axle. just let off the gas then. that way you'll know what it feels like and wont be worried if it happens by "accident".
downshifting and overrevving (missing4th and dropping into 2nd) can do damage to your tranny but its more of a problem when your FI then when you are NA

Can't help but to love the life of being a rotary owner though 'eh? How many Z and S2000 owners get to hear advice like this.
OP- Looks like you got nothing to worry about.

I had a FAILURE doing this, but not in a RX8. In ~1978 I had a RX4 wagon (yes a 13B rotary with a 4 speed). I was returning to LA from a long trip. Coming down the grapevine I decided to use 3rd to control my speed (doing 70+ in a 55 in those days). Accidently put it into 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Surprised it went into 1st. Never had a chance to let the clutch out - so the engine never reved up. But BOY DID THE CLUTCH BLOW APART! The stock fabric disk couldn't handle the high RPM and disintagrated. With no clutch I had to just coast down the hill and then to a stop.

ive had a couple of experiences like this..ive always driven tiptronics an when i bought this car (about 3 months ago) i was not used to changing gears when "getting on it"...
i pulled up to a stoplight...an Audi A6, brand new, dealer tag, and as ZEPHYR said hot chick inside...i decided i would give it a go. i missed second comletely and because the light changed so fast i did not have time to turn DSC off...had a bad launch, fuel cut off, but other than that it was a nice, wonderful, embarrsing (spl) moment.

stop flooding ur engines
i cant say i agree with that. mine bounces at 9500. ive seen some customers car bounce at "9" but that was bc the tach literally was off, the way i could tell was bcthe idle was showin 200 rpm and i knew that sure wasnt the real idle. a new instrument cluster fixed the tach issue.....
isnt there some aftermarket reflash (i.e. RB) that does away with the limiter? after like 11k wouldnt the clutch/flywheel be the thing to worry about? i dunno but itd think the clutch would go to pieces after long periods at 11k....
and whoever said the stock rev limit is 10,500 id love to ride in ur car! haha!
