Accidentally spiked the tach to 10K!

Well, I'm still getting used to the car and where the gears are. During my drive today I was attempting to down-shift into 5th but hit 3rd instead. As I re-engaged the clutch I realized my mistake right as the engine spiked to a quick 10K on the tach. Luckily nothing appeared to go wrong (yet). Just curious if anyone has made a similar noob mistake and if so, has it caused major issues later?

I thought for sure I was going to be posting in the "Replace an engine" forum. Thanks for the info. You've settled my mind :-)

I did this one time when i was still getting used to the gearring.... i was redlining all the way to 3rd and wanted to grab 4th, grabbed 2nd gear instead.....when i hear the weird revving sound and the needle bouncing off the tach past 10K, i was nervous too. Luckily nothing happened. No smells, or anything. So yeah dont worry about it. ...rotaries are meant to revv.

you'll hit fuel cut off if you keep going.

yea, and?

this motor was bench tested to something like 12.5-13,000RPM by Mazda.

you'll hit fuel cut off if you keep going.
you can over rev it by grabbing to low a gear. Fuel cut and electronic rev limiter cant do **** about that. same deal in most every car. the only protection against it is the trans not allowing you to engage that gear out of its operating range.

Done it twice. Both times I was in 5th about to take a hard right turn and tried to downshift for a little more backend control...
...due to the outward lateral g's, I downshifted from 5th to 2nd...

It's jerky, it's loud, and it's scary!

...but the car is fiine

Wife did it last night... Tried to downshift from 5th to 4th but hit 2nd. (I was in the car behind her and heard it/tires, but when I looked up everything was fine and did not think anything about it. Only know she did it because she called me and told me... lol)

Once my buddy was autocrossing my old '85 rx7, he attempted to shift without the clutch from 2-3 and accidently hit 1. Buzzed it up well over 12k but didn't do it any harm.

I think many have done that. I have a few times and this is not my first rotary car.

Don't sweat it.

where would you be to have to make a hard right turn while your doing speeds that require you to be in 5th gear??? lol

Several reasons, actually...

Both times I did this, I had only owned the car for about 2 months. This was also my first manual tranny car EVER, so I wasn't quite used to having to switch gears on my own.

The roads I used to take to see my girlfriend (now my ex) had some nice high speed turns in them (gotta love minor farm roads). The drive was chock-full of big sweepers, so I would just keep it in 5th (decent "oomph" in the backend while still keeping the mpg relatively high). There was the occasional hard turn that would require some braking beforehand, and I would sometimes forget that I wasn't driving an AT, press the pedal, and not get the power I wanted. In my moment of "oh ****! But this turn is so much fun!" I would hastily downshift just as I was starting the turn...

...you know the rest from there :/

so what you are saying is that you weren't paying attention to what you were doing?

makes sense as to why you never see cops either.

I would really hate to live anywhere around where you drive.

Geeze, Mac - having a bad day or something? 7 years worth of driving habits require a more than 2 months to break. No need to be so critical over the matter.

Wow. Just wow. What the hell? I don't ever recall insulting you in the past, especially to the point that you would feel the need to hijack a thread to get back at me.

Same here. If you take this much offense to someone posting about a time they mis-shifted, I'd hate to catch you when you're road-raging.

9000RPM, but our tach is off, so it shows up as ~9300 on the tach. just run your engine to the revlimit and make a note of where on tach it cuts fuel, that's the real 9000.

I had this very same issue today actually, twice.

I came out of a turn hot and went WOT, was too slow on the clutch (yeah, I know, I suck) and hit about 9300. But worse...

About an hour ago I pulled up to a stoplight along a nice open straight. A new model Civic SI pulled up next to me, looked sharp and came equipped with a hot girlfriend in the passenger seat. I didn't think I would have any problem taking it...I got a bad launch and he got a good one, but once I hit second we were about even- until I heard a whine and a whoosh next to me and he walked away, and ended up about 3/4 car length ahead. I kept it in second too long and hit somewhere around 9500k. I was glad MY girl wasn't in the car...

Anyway, my car is new too and I'm still getting used to it. Tonight's stunt left me a little bitter (it sounded like the SI was boosted or something- debadged, lowered, sleek rims). Had I known that, I wouldn't have had any interest in going for it, but that's part of the game. What really pissed me off was my own slow reaction time and taching at 9500. The car has 2500 miles on it and I know all about revving these things to prevent carbon build-up, but 9500 sure as hell seems awfully high.

The redline is there for a reason right?????
At what point does the limiter or fuel cut off hit? I saw above someone mentioned to rev it as high as she'll go, wait for the cut-off and that's the real redline, but this sounds suspect to me. I hit 9500, no misshifts, in second, and it there was no sign of it stopping.

OP- You're in good company. I was shaken up too and I didn't even hit 10k.

Paying attention to what you are doing trumps habits.

Wasn't insulting you, just making an observation. If you were offended by that maybe its time to quit doing things who's stories lead you are ashamed of to the point of offense.

If you haven't figured it out, its not about a mis-shift. I really am pissed off about the number of ******** out there on the road not paying attention to driving and causing me or my car bodily harm.

i go over the stock redline everyday on purpose- dont worry about it
zephyrzone- get a clear space and run the car in first gear(or 2nd ifthe speed limit permits) until the fuel cuts. it will feel like you snagged a hook with your axle. just let off the gas then. that way you'll know what it feels like and wont be worried if it happens by "accident".

downshifting and overrevving (missing4th and dropping into 2nd) can do damage to your tranny but its more of a problem when your FI then when you are NA
