I gave up trying to find this info in the forum. I might be useful to set up an extended engine warranty FAQ.

I have a 2005 that has already had 1 engine replacement. It is still less than the 8/100 limits. Will I be able to get a 2nd engine replacement under the 8 year/100,000 mile warranty?

I have had someone tell me that the first replacement engine is only warrantied for 12 m onths or 12K miles. Is this true?

Yes your engine replacement (which is probably a remanufactured engine) will carry the remainder of your 8/100 warranty, if you are still under. But you would have to have low compression numbers on the reman engine to get another one. Some RX8 owners here are on their second remans due to poor quality of some of the reman engines.

If you got a reman engine and your 8/100 limit was passed then that reman engine is only warrantied for 12 months or 12k miles, whichever comes first. Then no further engine warranty on that engine, no matter what the low compression numbers you might have after 12months/12k miles. This was how it was explained to me by our Regional Mazda Service rep.

If you are under the 8yr AND 100k (expires when you hit either limit, and most 2005s are hitting the 8yr), then you can keep getting engines until Mazda gets sick of it and comes up with a reason to deny you. There are several people that got 3-4 engines under the warranty when the remans were really poor.

The 12 month 12,000 mile warranty is a SERVICE warranty, and it will only apply if you pay for the engine replacement out of pocket.

Engines replaced under the 8yr 100k are only covered by the 8yr 100k automatically. It is up to district managers over the dealer whether or not to also apply the 12/12 service warranty parallel to that. So yes, your engine could be replaced under the extended engine warranty at 7yrs 364 days, 99,999 miles, and the it will no longer be covered the next day or the next mile.

Yes as my Mazda Regional Rep/Manager told me, they have the decision authority to replace a bad reman engine up to the 8yr/100,000 mile period, whichever comes first. Hey I love my RX8 and will keep it running as long as possible, but it is sad that the Renesis engine coupled with improper care has led to so many failed engines. As an owner of seven rotaries since 1973, I can look back on Mazda rotary history and no previous stock version of the rotary engine has suffered such a high percentage of failures. I am sure the poor experience and recurring costs of replacing so many of these engines had left a bad taste in the mouth of new Mazda CEO ( a bean counter) and is partly the reason he won't go forward with a new rotary car ("unless we can sell 100,000 a year") which was never achieved by any RX model. Hopefully all the research and development money and efforts from the Mazda engineers on a direct-injected, skyactiv (possibly laser-ignited) 16X rotary won't be wasted. Mazda's President (a rotary pioneer) still seems to be committed to his baby. We can only hope the rotary has a better fate than just being a small electric motor generator in a hybrid Mazda 2.

Great news. Thanks for the feedback. Some mechanics here had told me that it only covered a single engine replacement. If that was true I didn't want to have a dealer test it, refuse the replacement, and tip them off that I was having problems when I went to trade it in.

I have complete service records so proving adequate maintenance should not be a problem. That is assuming that an occasional oil and filter change by the owner is acceptable as long as it is documented.

I will post an update with the results. Thanks again. ;-)

How do you even know you have engine problems? What would suck is driving the 8 with slight engine damage w/o noticing. The dealer would probably lie to you so they won't have to replace your engine at no cost.

My 2004 rx8 done with all recalls except engine replacement, after starter replacement almost 9 years ago, my little rx8 never broke down until today, January 26, 2014 and 134K miles. I am thinking about starter replacement but I am not sure yet. Battery is also old and I will replace tomorrow but I think starter is bad. The rx8 warranty according to previous messages is no longer good so I have to spend a lot of money on parts and labor. any advice
Thanks,
solrx8

give us more info when you say it "broke down". Have your coils, wires and plugs ever been replaced ? Will it start or run at all ? Does it feel like low compression ? Have you ever had a compression test ? The 8yr/100,000 miles on the engine was a warranty, not a recall. To have some problems after 134k miles is not unusual. Please give us more info so we can try to advise.

Repair costs are more than the car is worth running well. To me, doesn't make sense to replace the engine at this point. Looking for other options. Only option is to scrap? I obviously need to maximize the amount I can get for the car. Appreciate suggestions.
I understand your situation. My last engine presented me with this issue. I think you have to decide if you love the car and don't mind spending the $6,600 to have a very nice car back or spend more money on a newer car. I chose to rebuild and frankly, for me, it was worth the money and I spent more than that. I had Rick Engman build mine. The integrity of the RX8 is amazing. By the way, that was my 4th engine.

So I'm a bit confused, the warranty starts on the date it's sold right? So on the title for my 2006 RX-8 it says date first sold: 2008, does that mean I have a couple more years with the ext warranty?

The title might not be a good way of checking. Calling up MNAO is the best way, since it's the same record that the dealer will use.

However yes, if your RX-8 is a 2004 model that wasn't first sold until January 15th 2008, then your 8yr 100k engine warranty wouldn't expire until January 15th 2016 unless you hit 100k before then.

My 2009 RX-8 wouldn't start when I came home last Friday.
It's cold here in michigan and I haven't run it since the Sunday before (I'm out of town Monday thru Friday) so I only drive her in the weekends. I tried to get her jumped. No luck, took her to a mechanic near me, says it failed a compression test. Took her to Mazda, mazda did discover it to be the engine due to the compression and misfires also from the ignition coils. 40k miles and replacing the engine but warranty covered but not the coils. What should I keep in mind after this new engine?

You are going to need that 8 year 100k warranty....these cars have spotty reliability and lose compression and have a high rate of engine failure as time passes. A great chassis in search of a great engine.

I disagree with RX8sold4EVO. I have owned seven rotaries and NEVER have had a rotary engine failure in 40 years and over a million rotary miles on street and track since 1973. If you know how to properly care for the rotary engine it can be very reliable and last a long time. Formerwow states he has bad coils and has 40,000 miles on the car. Well coils and wires in an RX8 should have been changed at no later than 30,000 miles or sooner depending on how hard it was driven and plugs changed at 15,000 miles . Any weak ignition component : plugs, coils, wires can lead up to engine failure if not replaced. Rotary engines are very sensitive to healthy ignition. A Series 2 2009 RX8 with healthy ignition and well maintained should not be having engine failure . Don't know the mileage here but still this is not the norm. Yes there have been some Series 2 engine failures but the series 2 has better oil metering and should last if properly maintained and driven hard only after proper warmup. I would need to know more about how car was driven and maintained before ever making such a blanket statement as yours RX8sold4EVO. Hey why are you even still on this forum with your mind set?

Warranty isn't worth the paper its printed on. My 05 was still under warranty and I had a compression test done at the Mazda dealer. It failed but they wouldn't put a rebult engine in it and just refudsed to do anything. Then they asked me if I wanted them to replace the front struts because they were seeping. Not.

They would have had to have given you a specific reason, if not then you just rolled over. I got a reman at 96,000 miles.

Any reason they gave me was totally bogus. The repair manual specifically say that if the compression is below XXX then the engine should be rebuilt. I didn't roll over as you put it. I contacted Mazda Canada and talked to about 4 different persons including the engineers. I finally threatened to take a court action. They just said no. The technician who did the comp test said the vehicle was running okay and didn't need repairing. I wasn't going to spend 3000.00 fighting Mazda so I had no other option. I will never buy another Mazda again and I have owned 3 previously. I love the RX8 but the warranty by Mazda Canada is not worth the paper it is printed on. I had warranty issues with one other Mazda also.

SilverEight, the car was within the warranty had only 62000 miles and was 3 months under the warranty period at the time the issue was discovered. You must know that a warranty does not start until the vehicle is first placed in service. This occurred last June.

Mazda simply refused to follow the procedure in their own workshop manual.

Well, if the dealer is giving them information that the engine passed their tests, then it makes sense that Mazda Canada would refuse to replace the engine.

And it is entirely possible, and viable, for an engine to fail a compression test, pass a BARO test, and the dealer refuse to replace it. I had that exact situation happen. See here: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...s-fail-194710/

(Note that my posts were "at the time", and that engine lasted another 40,000 miles before failing another compression test, at which point it was replaced)

There should have been a recall on these 2004 cars. My motor is gone before $72,000 miles. Warranty just ran out after 8 year mark. I would like to know if anyone has gotten a lawyer and Mazda replaced their engine? Way too many cars with this problem not to have recalled .
