Here's some data I collected recently on my 2004 4AT GT Sport w/ 13,000 miles.
All data is pure highway (1 to 3 stops - pee/coffee/food breaks) 70-80mph.
My city mpg is in the dumps... about 2/3 of what I get on the highway. I'm happy to get 200 miles to a tankful.
I'd love to see a drop in gas prices but a correlation to the olympics in China escapes me. I recognize China sucks down a ton of oil, but wuz the connection to the games?

I have read somewhere that the first half a tank gets you better mileage than the last half a tank. Anyone think this could be true? I've never believed it myself, but some of his numbers look like they could confirm.
I basically always fill my tank up as soon as the light comes on. I always use 93, and I don't make preferences for which gas stations. I choose the cheapest ones (well I go to the same two stations that are right next to me).
We are also stuck with 10% ethanol BS over here. I find that somewhat amazing actually they're forcing us to pay for 10% ethanol with these ridiculous gas prices.
Swoope, how do you do it. What does the room fuse disable? Radio and lights and everything? And also you are saying 87 gets better mileage, or is it just for the cheaper fuel, but same mpg as premium, hence more efficient money-wise?

Judging from the wild variance in miles traveled and actual mpg, it looks like you're not filling up the tank completely on each refill. Or in other words you're not running it to empty every time.

like pulling the battery cable.. and you just remove and replace the fuse. you cant keep it out. car will not start.
and yes, i find that 87 does give better mileage.

I've found the harder I drive my car the better mileage I get. I know it sounds strange but if I shift later and get away quick from lights and stop signs and then go drive on the highway my car seems to do better then just driving on the highway. I don't know why it would but I usually make my commutes from school and get horrible mileage, but I went to visit a friend in Pennsylvania and even got stuck in traffic going nowhere and got better mileage then I usually do. I attribute it to the fact that I didn't try to baby that tank of gas at all and now I drive my car hard all the time and it seems to keep me above the 21's. It's weird I guess our cars love to get moving.

This is interesting because I just noticed a 1.5 mile per gallon jump on the last two tanks after the car hit 31,500. I originally started to question whether the gauge was reading right but now I average close to 20 while before it was about 18. This is a 50/50 mix of highway and city.

Make sure you guys are doing the math right. As in when you fill up don't take the mileage report and divide it by your tank size, but divide it by how much you put in the car on a fill up. That's the total you've actually used. My truck posts 19gal tank, yet when I fill up when it's on E, it only fills up around 16 gal each time. Probably the gauge could be tweaked more accurately but point remains the same. How much you put in the tank to full is how much you actually used for the distance.

I just recently got my rx8 about 2 weeks ago
Its an 04 Silver Auto. ( couldnt get manual... parents )
ive been fillin it up with premium v power from sheel
but i get about 138 miles off a little higher then 3/4 of a tank.. which is really horrible i think
i think that averages to 9 maybe 10 MPG... which is really low and you guys are gettin 200?
anyone know how I can fix this? Any suggestions?

The reason I ask is because my fuel gauge towards the middle runs down
quickly but towards the end it goes slow so, if you only get 138 miles till
the light comes on, that's quite bad. The fuel light comes on roughly with about
3-4 gallons left (at least on mine).
The other question is how do you drive it, do you drive it ***** to the wall
or are you more of a conservative driver? When you shift could be another
thing to look at, when do you shift, around 3k rpm or around 5-6k rpm (or higher)?

Highway wise averaging 70 (55-65 zones on and off) it shows potential to easily tap beyond 340 miles for a full tank on my '06 MT GT trim depending on what speed I'm going most frequently. So it's around a 22-23 mpg range for highway, not too shabby.
Mixed I get about 18.5-19.
Oh and it's unfortunately breathing that ethanol crap in the NE with no station around that doesn't use it.

Are you letting it get to the point where the fuel light comes on?

Cannot understand all the commotion over gas mileage. I have two 8s, both 2008s, one a MT and one a AT. The MT gets 21.5mpg and the AT gets 23mpg on winding country roads driving above 60mph. The "fun factor" alone could be worth forgiving 5mpg. I wish everyone on these 8-threads who long for Prius-mileage would actually drive one...it would leave the 8s to all of us that appreciate it for the practical sports car that it is...

I get 22c/25h and I redline it quite often. I have an 05 mt with 88,000 miles on it and have aem intake/ralco pulley set/agency exhaust, and I run 93 in it/5w20.
That prius is a joke 45/50mpg and in a few years of owning it you gotta replace the batteries which is around 6k which I got the price from the toyota dealer, so where is the real savings going since the car is 22,000-26,000. This is just my opinion.

I know on a recent road trip to the Watkins Glen area of NY, I averaged 26mpg on the highway cruising at 70-71mph. I got right around 370 miles on my best tank and it took 14 gals to fill up. My car has ~50K miles on it. I typically get 21-22mpg in my daily commute which has ~50% city driving.

Seriously, you want MPG out of a rotary? Get a true hybrid:
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/g...r-by-giugiaro/
http://www.autoblog.com/photos/genev...namir/1400772/
Frazer Nash has developed a series hybrid drivetrain (like the Voltec drivetrain in the Chevy Volt) that uses an 814cc rotary engine driving a generator. The generator charges a 400V lithium polymer battery pack that feeds electrons to a pair of electric motors at each axle with a cumulative output of 362 hp. The system is claimed to give the Namir a top speed of 187 mph, 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds while still managing 91.7 mpg (US)!

I get the same exact mileage on my '05 Shinka as I do on my '07 CX-7: 23 Highway, 19 city.
The funny thing about my car, is thad the fuel gauge acts really different from every other car I've owned. at the 1/2 tank point, I've driven about 100-115 miles. This scared the crap out of me when I first bought the car. BUT, then the gauge slows down. By the time I refuel, which is a while after the empty light is on, I've driven anywhere from 270-300 miles. I usually fill up 14.5 - 15 gallons per gas station visit.
also, all highway driving definitely improves the milage on my car; the most I've driven with a single tank was 320 miles before refill.
I only use Shell V-Power (93 octane).

70% city I get about 250miles on a full tank. If Its 50/50 I get about 270 and if it's full highway I can get max 330miles I think I have a really good rx8 for fuel mileage.
