20w 50 for rx8?

I am thinking of changing my oil to 20w 50 mineral silkolene. Here in Malta is moderate climate, what you think??

It's not a smart idea, especially with the stock oil pressure regulator.

^why? In manuals for other countries they recommend 20w50 for certain climates.
I personally use 10w40 myself.

Don't know what manuals you're referring to... the us one says to use crappy 5w20, in europe the recommended viscosities range between 5w30 and 10w30.
I always used a good 10w40, even before changing my oil system's pressure.

Malta is very close to italy, 20w50 is definitely too much both climate and oil system capabilities wise.

FSM?

Not only does the manual say 5w20, but you are only supposed to change your oil every 5k miles :D

I use 10-40 myself I think if you're in a place where the temp will reach over 37.7 C I don't see anything wrong with running 20-50 I've used it before during the summer months with out any issue I live in southern california so temps in summer will exceed 37.7 C (100 degrees F) so I sometimes run 20-50, but if it's mild there I think 10-30/10-40 should be fine.

Yeah, that looks like it. I wouldn't listen to the US version.... 5w20 is garbage for rotary. I always used 20w50 in my FC's year round with no issues.
I used 5w30 when I first got mine, but at 300 mile intervals for 900 miles to help get kind of a flush since the original oil looked so bad. After that it's been 10w40 for about 10k miles now.

Yep I have been using 10w40 since I got the car at 18k miles also. Seemed the best choice based on the little chart and from reading on here. Now I am at 37k miles and still running great(knock on wood).

you will have better engine life using 20 50, if you use 5 20 like i did it will eat up the seal, and blow your engine eventually like the situation im in.

I'm still using 5w-20, the recommended one, no major problem so far.

Yes, but if you think it will be that cold I would go with 10w40 or 10w30.

FC has weaker oil pressure regulator but still survive the 20w50. all year long.

Well I will not use any synthetic or semi syn, absolutely not, it will damage the seals. I will run 10w 30 mineral and see how it will run.

I'm in the US and my manual says to use good 5w20.

Besides that page from the Australian owner's manual, one edition of the shop manual lists all of those oil grades without even specifying temperature ranges. No wonder everyone argues about which to use!

You're right, typo on my side! It's our manual that states to use 5w30

In the summer in florida I ran 20W50. 5w20 turns into water. 10w40 even gets thin. had over 110k miles on my 2004 rx8 before that engine was replaced after an accident, still ran awesome and had good compression. Make sure you premix though. the thicker oil doesnt inject nearly as well.

yeah i dont see any issues and do see some benefits with running 20w50 if the climate is anything like louisiana alabama georgia or florida.
