As far as I know, the remotes without the trunk button are for the Mazda 6 hatchbacks, which has a 5th door so there's no need for a button. Just make sure when you're buying from ebay that it has a trunk button. I see that a lot of them have uncut keys with them too. That makes it much easier. I paid much more a year or 2 ago because I had to buy them separately. Good luck.

Yes, programing the key makes the buttons work. Did I read that wrong?

The switchblade key has to be programmed to work with your car's ECU ( it is a transponder key) once the key is cut it will turn in the ignition but the transponder chip in the key has to be recognized by the ECU. If you have two working keys (even if one is the valet key) you can program it yourself. The remote that unlocks the doors and trunk (whether it is the switchblade from 05 or the keyfob 04) also needs to be programmed. If you have one working remote, you can do it yourself. I bought an 05 switchblade key with trunk lock from ebay at transponder island. It came with full instruction on programming the transponder chip and the remote.

So the good news is that you can buy an 05 switchblade key for your 04 like I did, it will work. I recommend getting the blank cut at a locksmith for about 5 bucks, I don't trust the kid at the hardware store. If you only have one working key, you need to go to the dealership to program the transponder chip into the ECU (about $75) but you can program the remote locking yourself and save money from the dealership programming it if you have one remote that works.

That is a rip, the keys are actual Mazda keys they aren't third party. They just want to sell a key at the outrageous $180+ price. Some locksmiths have the equipment to program a transponder key, you may want to call around if you don't have another convenient dealer.

You read it right, i didn't know if programming it just made the chip work with the car or if it made the whole remote work. Thanks for clearing it up

I think you read it wrong. The key (with the transponder inside) and the remote are two separate pieces with two different procedures for programming.

Program the key: starts the car.
Program the remote fob: locks and unlocks the door and truck.

I really need to do this myself. Although I really don't need the remote part of it but you have to have it to actually get the flip action. I use my alarm remote for the doors and trunk. Oh well, save me from stabbing myself in the leg sometimes.

1. Try the above.

2. Try another dealer. Don't know how many there are on the island.

3. If that doesn't work, then buy one from them, get the receipt, get it done, then return the other one to get your money back.

So do you need to separately program the lock/unlock?

Yes, see my earlier reply. There are two programming issues, one to program the key's transponder chip into your car's ECU. That allows the car to start. The second programming needed is for the lock/trunk (whether it is a separate keyfob type or the switchblade) the ECU must also be programmed to accept the signal from the "buttons".

Haha thats funny, It just reminded my of how one of my freinds bought an amp online. At first it worked but then it developed some type of fault. So what he did was, he went to circut city bought a new one (same type and model) then took the broken one to circuit city and got his money back.

................OKAY!! So what is the verdict OP??? You are or are not able to get you key cut, programmed (and by programmed i mean: car turns on, you can lock/unlock/trunk/alarm from the remote)???????? I'm ready to purchase mine...

This thread has got out of control, I'm lost.
