Trade in for purchase of RX8

How many have traded in a car at the dealer for an 8 and did you get a poor, fair or very good price on the trade. I know there is no science to how dealers work so just trying to get a general idea.

I made my deal over the internet and got bluebook sight unseen for my trade. I never mention my trade-in until I get the price of the car i am purchasing set so as to avoid the salesperson messing with the numbers between the two. I bought a 04 sport package with spoiler, spare tire and 6 cd changer for 24 and some change. Received 5500 for my trade, financing 19 something.
Once i made the deal i wanted i drove to the dealership, signed the paperwork and was off a little over a half hour after arriving. They had never seen my trade but i told them it had to be 5500 or no deal and I was honest about the condition of my trade.
Get the price you are agreeable to first, then work the trade.

I traded in my Jeep Cherokee for my 8. But my Cherokee had transfer case problems so I didn't make that much money on it. I just wanted to get rid of it anyway. I owned 2 jeeps and have transmission problems in them both. A trade-in is very subjective and if you take it to a dealer there are a lot of factors. But in my case, they bought it from me and didn't even put it on their lot, they sold it to some third party dealer. Probably one of those "buy here, pay here" places.

Doesn't matter what they give you specifically for your trade-in. Negotiate for the difference between what they give you for the trade-in and what they are going to charge you for the car. That drives them crazy and they can't jerk you around by manipulating trade-in price and new car price to make you think you are getting a good deal.

Go to one of the on-line services like Edmunds.com, get the average retail price of your trade-in and the bottom line invoice cost to the dealer of the new car. Subtract trade-in value from new car invoice price and that should be your going in number for starting negotiations. Then decide the maximum difference price you will pay. Should be no more that a few hundred dollars above your going-in price.

Their initial reaction to this approach will be that there is no way they can meet that price, so make a counter offer of a couple of hundred dollars over your going-in price, and after several trips by the salesperson to the sales manager desk, make your "best and final offer" using just that terminology, and it may get you a decent deal. If it doesn't, walk out and find another Mazda dealer willing to deal. Better yet, pick up a copy of Remar Sutton's book, "Don't Get Taken Every Time" and you will get an education about how to buy car while being entertained. Try Half.com if you can't find it at Amazon.com or your local book store.

Of course, a better approach for you may be to sell the trade-in yourself and purchase the new car without a trade-in. That's a personal decision you will have to make.

I traded in an AT 8 for an MT 8. Got the new 8 for 21k (sticker was 29.5K) and the trade-in value of the old 8 was 19k. The new one has more options and is an MT so it's value is actually more than the $2000 difference between the two anyhow, so I didn't lose anything.

I researched what my car was worth and the dealership low-balled me on the car so I sold it to Carmax for a couple hundred more than what it was worth.

I've traded in my 02 Millenia and my 04 Auto RX8. And ofcourse I took a hit on both................. but nothing too bad. Either way, it was well worth it! I love my 8 to death.
