Question Thinking of purchasing a new '04

What's up everyone,

I'm new the forum, and I've been reading through it extensively for the past few weeks. I was prepared to buy a slightly used RX-8, but then I found 5 '04 RX-8s at a dealership near me, in Red, Blue, Silver, Green and Black. The Silver and Black had the GT package with Nav and the appearance package. The others are equipped with the Touring Package only, but also have Nav.

I'm very interested in either the Brilliant Black or Sunlight Silver models, both of which are marked down $4000 (as are the others). The markdown brings the MSRP to about $31K, and the sales guy casually mentioned he could go down to mid $28K to $29K. I test drove the silver one yesterday but wasn't prepared to buy just then, so I didn't haggle with him. From reading the posts here, it seems like I should should go no higher than $27K, but I wanted to get some other opinions on these particular models. Oh, and I should mention that the silver one has about 150 miles on it and some minor wear on the seats, most noteably some rubbing markes on the sides of the seats. Mechanically the car feels like new, but I fully intend to inspect in more thorougly at a later time.

This forum has been invaluable to me in researching my purchase, and I appreciate any feedback or suggestions on this subject. Thanks in advance!

Hank

26-27 should be easily doable....if they still have 5 04's left, they should want to get rid of them

Consider that one with 150 miles used. That has probably been one of the managers weekend rides or something. And honestly, if you're going to pay 27k for a car that could be almost 3 years old, why not just spend a couple more grand for a new one? Plus Mazda has got to be due for some incentives already...

Well, I drive past the lot everyday, and it has just been sitting there. The 150 miles has been from test drives, which I do worry about... but if the price is right I can compromise. Maybe I shouldn't go higher than 26K...........

there's a $4000 cash rebate on the 04 8's right now, so you want AT LEAST invoice price - $4000 rebate for it.

good luck.

That is pretty weird considering you are in the same boat as I was. I purchased an 04 RX-8 with (I swear) 150 test driven miles on it. It's fully loaded except leather. Silver, Nav, Sunroof, Premium sound, and 18''s. Our out the door price was 26.5k. However, this was also back in early March. The only thing the car doesn't have is the ugly "moon" spoiler.

Best of luck to you as it is truly an amazing machine.

Thanks for the message. I guess since this one has leather I should expect to pay a little more than you, but like you said, you bought yours a few months ago. Also, I can't believe that this dealership wouldn't want to finally unload one of its FIVE '04 models and give me a really good deal on it. Plus at this point I'm not sure that some banks would even consider it a new car -- and as a result I might have to pay higher interest on it. I plan to go back in a couple days to see what they can really offer me. Luckily, when I was on the test drive, the sales guy and I realized we had a mutual friend from my office, who also knows the sales manager. Hopefully I can use that to my advantage. Oh, and he said something about ordering the car online so I can get an even better deal. I'll have to get some more info about that too.
