Thinking of buying

I'm looking at an '05 RX-8. What are going to be major costs after the sale? Right now I drive a very economical car, very good on gas and very cheap to maintain. Can I even do a regular priced oil change on this car? What are some of the outstanding costs I will encounter?

My friend bought a Toyota Matrix recently, and the oil changes are extremely expensive (compared with a Corolla or similar) because it uses a very specific oil filter. Just wondering what kinds of issues I may run into with the RX-8.

+ money for gasoline. It's a sportscar and a thirsty one at that. But well worth it imho.

^ yup i do my own oil changes but last one at a dealer ran me 30 bucks so its not bad but premium fuel plus 18 mpg is an expensive formula so be aware of that if u drive a corolla

Fuel will suck. First off, I can't drive stick anymore. (Funny, because I learned to drive on a stick.) Second, I commute a LONG commute daily and usually more miles on top of that. (60 to 100 miles a day.) Yeah, I'd be blowing money left and right on accy for this puppy. I love the LED lights.

If you get an auto definitely get an '06 or newer. They have the auto with the higher power motor and 6 spd. The 04 and 05s have a lower power motor for the auto and only a 4 spd.

Also as far as regular maintenance the biggest difference is ignition. You'll need to replace 4 ignition coils every 50K miles at $30 each and spark plugs are expensive. They're $80 for a set of 4.

That and gas will be expensive. You should plan on ~20mpg highway. So you'll be burning 3-5 gallons of gas a day. $9-$15 per day.

Yeah i agree with everyone's comments before. used to drive an 98 Toyota Rav4 and I thought the milage on it wasn't the best at just about 240miles per fill up but with the Rx8 you'll be lucky to average 200miles per tank. ..

o yeah and you will spend a ton on detailing supplies, next to gas and my car note that's about my next biggest expense.
