Is an RX-8 a good purchase?
I love the Mazda RX-8. I think they are So kool
They are really sporty and from what i've heard...FUN to drive.
On the other hand I have heard problems that RX-8 owners have had with thier rotary engines! This puts me off abit.
These problems have been mostly in the 03 and 04 models.
I really want to buy an RX-8, but dont want to have problems with it.
Can anyone tell me, are there some basic steps that people can take to maintain their RX-8 and have no problems??
And lastly, would It be a silly Idea, buying a brand new RX-8? I would I be likely to encounter engine troubles etc??
Rotaries being unreliable, is that just people stereotyping??
What do you think?

well my greatest advice to you is read the stickies and do your research... Ill tell you right now there are wayyyyy more people who have not had problems than those who have the problem is you always hear about problems not usually things working like they should. But do your research and do what makes you comfortable and if you still have questions come back to ask...

I will buy the new one, because the new one Mazda change a lot of thing to ensure engine life.
if you want to buy a use one it is a good idea to do a compression test before anything else.

I would definately buy brand new, know doubt about it. Second hand, I am bound to have trouble.
Has the RX-8 had engine troubles through it's whole six years? or is it just certain years?
Are there any 2009 or 2010 RX-8 owners that have had any troubles?

If I Buy an RX-8 it will be brand new! With the latest model 2010, has Mazda done things to ensure the life of the rotary engine?
I have not come across any reports of people having problems with 2008 or 2009 RX-8s. So thats is promising

How are you lost?? Quick question. When they say "Dont to drive an RX-8 like its stolen", could someone explain that to me in more depth please. Also When some sites talk about the carbon build up damaging the rotary engine and to eliminate this is to drive it hard! ie. Rev hard.
Would be most appreciated

The Series II (09-10) has had numerous changes to eliminate the problems encountered earlier. The oil injection is much more sophisticated and has an additional nozzle for each rotor. The engine oil pressure is also a lot higher. No reports of any engine issues that I'm aware of at this point, but there aren't many accumulated miles. Opinions vary, but the redline-a-day mantra IMO is highly suspect. It's a superb car, even ignoring the bargain price. It's also rare, which is both a plus and a minus. Don't take it to joe the shadetree mechanic - stick with the experts or dealers. If you drive it gently, you'll see 22 mpg in mostly highway cruising or maybe 19 city. Driven hard, much less; just be aware of that.

Thanks HiFlite999, where do you go to find RX-8 engine reports? for the different years.
When you say "the series II Rx-8 has had changes to eminiate problems encountered earlier"
Are these engine problems that they have fixed in the 09 and 10 models?

I have said it once this week and I will say it again; the rotary design contains a well known flaw that makes it inherently unstable after 20,000 miles. They rarely last longer than that. All the proof you need is to look at the thread a day that pops up talking about motors falling apart. Mazda over hyped the renesis because they had an over supply of blocks from the illfated RX7 that possesed the same flaws. They needed to move those blocks or eat the cost. So they put them in the RX8, which was actually slated to have a V-8. All you folks that bought them were patsy fools taken in by Corporate hegemony.

Everyone is bullshiting you.
They just changed the way the seals get oil.
There have been not changes to the engine before 09, just programing of the oil pump.
If your going to buy a new one, why the hell do you care about the older models?

Slow down and read before typing. "eliminate problems" is slightly vague, but then I list some changes. Am I talking about styling? stereo? Nope, engine. Then I conclude by saying I've not read of any engine issues. There is no central repository of data outside of manufacturers for any engine. You get a feeling for what is going on with sites like this one. But it is not spoon fed to you.
I don't know your age, but I'm guessing that it's not 50. In school, in media, and so on, you have gotten what passes for information spoon-fed to you. Real life isn't like that. There are few simple answers (only "sound-bites" that pretend to be answers). You want a simple answer which doesn't exist. The guys generally want to help, but get irritated when you're in such a big hurry that you can't read and process what's being said. Hence, the bs.
