Purchasing MODS with used car ???

Question:

I"m looking at used RX8s. If/when I get one, I know that the mod bug willhit me, and I'm going to want to do some minor mods. Stuff like a cat back exhaust, sway bars, springs, - I'm not looking to go FI, but I'd like the car to be lower, handle better...heck, maybe even the flywheel upgrade.

rather than buy the car used, and then pay up front out of pocket for all these mods AND thelabor to get them installed...I came up with this hair brained scheme..

let me know if it would work..

given how slow the car market is for sports cars right now. suppose I go to my local mazda dealer and say "you know that mazda RX8 you have for sale for $19k". i'll give you 19k for it, but I want the following mods installed on it as part of the deal. then name off a couple grand in mods.

bascally, I think the dealer would probably SELL the car for 15-16k. so let's say I walk on the lot and say "here is a check for $15k for that car you have listed at $19k. take it or leave it. i'll buy it right now". I think there is a good chance they would hem and haw and then say DEAL.

ok...so knowing that I could proably shave about $4000 off the price they want... why not try to extort some free labor out of them. since their repair shop is in house, what does it really cost the dealership in terms of dolalrs, if they "give away" free labor??

suppose I want $3000 in mazdaspeed parts...they sell me the parts, make a small markup on teh items. and then have joe blow their mechanic install them and not charge me labor. they sell the car and make SOME profit, they get some markup on the mazdaspeed parts, and they eat some labor charges that are effectively "free" anyway. the mechanic is there anyway....so while putting in MS parts does cost them something in terms of their serice guy being tied up, but it's all in house.

the labor I would normally spend to get a flywheel installed, or a shock/spring setup...would run me quite a bit. if they would toss that in, and THEN let me finance the costs of the parts INTO The price/sale of the car - i'd wind up making out like a bandit.

and have a kick A$$ canyon carver out of the deal.

would the dealer go for this or am i dreaming???

Your probably dreaming, install everything yourself, you'll learn alot, and if you need help, there's DIY's you can read, or somebody on this site will probably be more than happy to help you.

50/50...

Dreaming on $4k in markup, dreaming on free labor that a dealer charges $80+/hr for... You may be able to negotiate Parts/Labor down on accessories a total of 25% off or so... and then negotiate a discount to cover for some of these installs...

This might work. Agree on Price including mods, dealer sells you car, you take physical delivery, all money changes hands, THEN the dealer will installl said items. But he's a MORON if he does it before all money is in house.

i've already done the installing it myself on several past cars. i have no interest in getting my hands chewed up installing shocks, or getting rust in my eyes putting on exhaust.

i've instaleld shocks/springs/full exhausts, brakes, etc. it was fun when i was single. i've got kids, busy with a job. i'd rather pay someone else to do it and just have fun driving it.

you don't think they'd come off $4k on a car listing for 19k when i see private party ones for 16-17k?

i say they would take it. times are tough. sports cars aren't selling.

the deals are just going to get better.

Wear safety glasses next time.... Oh and i dont think that whole free labor thing is going to happen , also 15k is steep , especially for DEALERSHIP prices. I dont know , how many miles on the car are you aiming for?

They won't do it. You will have to use two transactions.

One to buy the car. Then another for the MODs.

The only Mods allowed will be Mazdaspeed.

Dealerships do not install aftermarket parts.

You got to be kidding! That's what they buy it for.

You have to buy from a private party or someone on the forum.

if the car sits there long enough - they'll unload it at virutally no profit.

if you are patient, you will find the deal.

my last car I bought used. the window sticker at the dealer was 36k. I got them down to 31k. that's almost 15%.

getting this 8 down the same amount would be dropping it from 19k to 16500.

my thought was that they want to make a buck. if they think they will NOT sell the car that fast, or not make much on it, but they get the chance to make SOME extra mney on selling mods and making some labor charges..they might go for it.

i guess they may not be all fired up about selling me mods for free and doing ALL the labor for free...but getting them to discount it deeply might work.

Suppose I was joe schmo and walked into the dealer with a 2004 RX8 and said:

I want to buy and have you install the following items:

MS Flywheel
MS exhaust
MS coilovers
MS sway bars
MS strut bars

how much am I going to pay in PARTS and LABOR?

i'm guessing parts, at retail would be about $3000.
Labor would be another couple grand?? so $5000 of mods.

suppose you offer them full retail for the parts, but free labor? or 10% of all the parts and 50% off labor...

somwhere in the middle they will say DEAL and i'd get all the goodies in one shabang.

Hey lucky you, man! I can't see free labour, no way. Definitely 10% off parts and something off labour. But do you really want all MS stuff?

Good luck.
