Thumbs down Mazda Sunnyvale dealership in CA

Some story I want to share. I'm looking for Mazda RX-8 now and yesterday I send "quote request" to Mazda Sunnyvale dealership. I described exactly what I want -- Auto, Tit color, Nav. Today's morning they called me and told me they have a car for me. ok, I went there with my wife. no automatic on lot at all. salesman was trying to push me to by manual. he was very loud, talking a lot, laughing on his own jokes. He told me the car is so hot he don't want to hear about invoice or even MSRP. Then he did some search in his system and told me that there is no such car in CA (and again trying to sell me manual...). I told him if he will have what I want -- call me and we will talk. I almost left but he caught me saying he found the car for me. I went back. The car has not a color I want, it has GT (I was looking only for Sports pkg) and they want more then MSRP. When I finally saw the number I was so tired of them I simply said "no, thanks" and walked out. The salesman started chasing me and screaming (!) on me and my wife that we did waste his valuable time and we must pay him for it! at the end he called me "stupid" and something else I did not hear exactly. My wife was shocked! That's not what you except if you go to some place to spend about $30K! I understand that is not Mazda, but some moron on dealership, but my wife now want to buy Lexus. Maybe their salesmen are less rude, stupid and annoying.

Don't change cars just because one guy tried to pull the "Angry Salesman" technique. I had a guy do that back when I was looking for the Probe GT.

It was all "What do I have do today to sell you a car?" and so I told him. He then went away and came back with a number $350 higher I told him no deal - no way unless they came down to my original number. He then got mad trying to pressure me into doing something stupid so I walked out. Told him he was a stupid ****** for pulling that **** on me. Told the sales manager that his salesman was stuipd ****** for pulling that **** on me (even if the sales manager didn't mind the technique being used he would burn the salesman for trying it on me - he should of read I didn't take no bullshit or disrespect). And made sure each time I was courteously loud. I had the salesman shouting something at me as I got in my car. I gave him the finger and ended up buying the car elsewhere.

For $33,000+ I expect my a courteous, civil negotiation. I know what they make on the car. They will know I know (hope I'm not too off). They'll either give me a fair deal or I'll look elesewhere for a fair deal. They can take a reasonable profit (altered by market) or get nothing from me.

My Pontiac dealer for the Sunfire GT knew what he was doing. I told him one day what I would want in a Sunfire, but didn't commit to anything. Next day he calls and tells me they ordered my car. I'm like, "What!". He tells me to relax. He can sell it to someone else if I don't want it and this way I got 6 weeks to decide. So 3 weeks later I decided, gave him a price (2.5% over invoice) in the parking lot, he was gone 10 minutes, and we had a deal. I doubt this will be so easy, but at least this time I will play a salesman (or two) vs. other dealers internet salesman and see what happens.

It is a bit of a drive for you, but you can try to go to Putnam Mazda in Burlingame. I had no such experience like yours, they treated me fair so far (I have the car on order). I was pretty firm about what do I want and for what price. There was no BS like what you mentioned. We haggled a bit, but it wasn't bad.

If you go there ask for Rebecca and tell her Tamas sent you :D

In case this dealership will try to pull some lame BS when my car arrives here, I'll certainly let the forum know. For now, I hope this won't happen.

Yeah, try Burlingame. I was offered $1000 below MSRP for their RX-8's and this was over 2 months ago. I was speaking with a salesman by the name of "Kino".

Sorry to hear about that bird_owl. Just for the record, I bought my '8 just over 2 weeks ago at Sunnyvale and had one of the best (i.e. smoothest, hassle-free) experiences at a car dealer yet. I dealt with Mike and his boss Kevin and eneded up paying $1300 below MSRP for a silver GT, which I thought was a good deal and I am happy with it.

The thing is, we came in as "internet" customers and it seems to me like they treat such customers differently than "retail" customers. For some reason, they assume you know your stuff, you know the dealer invoice, the kickback and all that and they are dead open about everything. They even allowed us to inspect their invoice book during price negotiation although Kevin does like a bit of "you're bleeding me dry, I've got a wife and kids to feed" but that's OK if you expect it to begin with. I think if you walk in off the street and pick the retail sales guy with the attitude you can expect a rough time and a lot of tricks.

Like I said, Mike and Kevin were about as fair and well-mannered as I can expect from car dealers and I have nothing but a positive experience to share. The finance guy was another story - he was arrogant, very rude to my wife and ignorant of any concerns we might have putting down 3 big checks!

Why is it that it's such a hassle buying a car anyway? Is there a school of car salesmanship somewhere teaching this stuff? It's pretty pathetic really and I don't understand it.

Lightbulb Sunnyvale Mazda Sux

Yeah, I also had a bad experience at Sunnyvale Mazda. I went for a test drive (they had plenty of cars on the lot) and they wanted me to fill out the credit application first. Whatever. I immediately walked off the lot. The guys there were complete jerks.

If you don't wanna trek all the way to Burlingame, go to Oak Tree Mazda on Stevens Creek Blvd (San Jose). I got my car there for 2k below MSRP and the guys there treated me like a human being. No pressuring, no bullcrap.

P.S. - Ask specifically for Glenn

Yes it is pathetic. I have friends (ex-car salesman) and they told me about the whole experience (I even think a dude on Car & Driver wrote an interesting and article about it). Yes, they do teach you how to haggle and how deal with the customers. Some salesman are better than others of course, but they teach them all the basic (and advanced) tricks of the trade. If you learn the tricks they use, you'll have a much easier time buying a car.

It's funny how people have different experiences. I also talked to Oak Tree and they seemed very inflexible considering I had two other offers from other dealers at the time. I got an email from Kathi Greene on the 16th of September saying this: "Your offer is below MSRP by about 1000.00". I then called to talk about it - she basically retracted the offer with a "I don't know what I was thinking, I must have been drunk when I wrote that" excuse (seriously - those were her words). I was pretty shocked by that considering I'd just been to Menlo and received a $1200 below MSRP quote. However, timing is obviously everything - I spoke to Kathi the day after the RX-8 Launch party at Oak Tree and I guess she was excited by the hype that it generated. I suggested this was case and the real reason for the offer retraction and she basically hung up the phone. Maybe I was a bit sarcastic but..whatever.

That same day I took the -1300 offer from Sunnyvale and brought my car home!

Yeah, timing must be everything. I guess it's who you talk to at that dealership. I originally talked with Kathi though (she handles Internet deals) and then moved over to Glenn. I was told that Kathi was leaving real soon, now I know why!

Agreed. Timing has a big impact on the price.

All of them have quotas, even the sales manager. It is easier to get a better deal when they are not able to sell a certain number of vehicles in a particular month.

I bought mine before the Oak Tree party from the one in Oakland. The finance guy is a pain in the butt, but the former sales manager was open to negotiation. (The new guy sucks!) I got only $600 off MSRP, but I still think the deal is reasonable considering the fact that certain dealerships want to sell me the car at over MSRP.
