Let the 2006 haggling games begin

OK....went to the local dealer...

2006 Red MT with Black/Chap leather
GT package

MSRP $32,005

He says "my price" is $29,999

How low should I start my counter offer ???

Thanks everyone.

Mark

BTW, I met him once but I'm handling the haggling via FAX.

Oh, and ps.....here's the specifics..

RX8 6p 26435.00
GT PKG 4510.00 (this include6 the 6 cd changer)
Transport 560.00

$32005.00

isn't 4510 about a grand high for the GT package?

I don't think you're going to get any room on price right now. The 2006's were not produced in the quantities that the 2004 and 2005 were, so dealers have fewer available and are less likely to deal. If you're looking to deal then you will have to wait until the 2007's are arriving in dealers sometime this winter.

Try offering them $27k. If they say no go, slap them with a dead fish and say "call me when you're ready to deal." I can't imagine that not working.

That's how I got mine back in '04

Think they charged me $800 dollars more for doing it though.

and I had to go to another dealership and have them pull the car for me.

I only got $2K off my 2006 Shinka but feel free to do better.

A bid's technique above is dead on. List + package - rebates (cash back/MAC) = OTD price + tax/tags

I wouldn't pay a dime over invoice. minus rebates ofcourse... and once the 07s come in, mazda will start doing huge rebates - one of the reasons why the resale value is so low...

initial deal

I got offered 3k off a base model after just looking at it. 26995 to 23995. They are offering a 1500 rebate from Mazda. Figure another 2 to 3 % kickback for the dealer from Mazda and that is why you get 2k off right away. I figure since I wanted a base model and they are probably harder to move, they offered me more. Do you have a trade-in? If so, more room to manuever. I figure with the starting price I got and haggling on the trade-in, I got another 1495 off and then started asking for extras. Before you agree, ask for extras. I got them to throw in a spoiler but they did not give on window tint and after about 5 hours of haggling, I wore down. What I should have done then is tell them I had to run and they had my number. I think they would have thrown in the tint then or called me later. Remember, if they know you want it, they won't want to let you out the door. My sales person actually lost composure at one point.

Just wait if you can. There is a lot of 06 inventory out there just sitting and gathering dust. When the 07s start arriving there should be some incentives and aggressive deals.

Go to Kbb.com and select your options. Find the invoice price and tell them you want it for $1,500 (current Mazda Cash) under invoice including all dealer fees and destination charges and not including the MAC incentive. Shouldn't be too hard but it depends on your dealer. Some Mazda dealers act like the RX8 is an M3 (currently out of production) or something and don't want to deal and then let them sit on the lots for 6 months.

These days there is very little markup with the Mazdas compared to what is avaliable with domestic market cars. A domestic vehicle might have a markup of 4k to 5k so there is plenty of room to move with negiotations.

Usually the best deal I have to offer to the customer is invoice + adds. If you can get the dealer to eat the adds, or a car that has none on them for invoice or close to it that's about the best you can expect.

But yes, it also depends on the demand and amount of vehicles on the lot. At the moment you would probably be able to get a better deal on a speed6 than an Rx8 because the speed6's have flopped (at least here in Arizona).

If there are rebates, then you have room to move. Otherwise it comes down to how far the dealer is willing to go. With the 2007's still a ways out you might have to wait until those start arriving.
