Mazda Ujima #1 Plant - Update
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 4:20pm
If you’re considering the purchase of a new Rx-8 or MPV in the next couple of months, the December fire at the Ujima No. 1 plant may affect your plans. The currently idle Ujima No. 1 plant is where the Miata, MPV, and Rx-8 are all assembled. Last month Mazda stated the fire-ravaged plant would not resume production of those three models until late March. Due to this delay in production, trying to find a particular color and option combination may prove to be difficult as time moves on.
As of December 1st 2004, there was a 181-day supply of Miata’s, a 93-day supply of MPV’s, and 128-day supply of Rx-8’s in the United States. Based on those numbers, there could be very few, if any, MPVs available in late March.
In the auto industry, a 60-day supply of vehicles is what most manufacturers strive for. Thankfully, when the fire hit, the United States was well stocked with those models. If there had been a 60-day supply, Miata, MPV, and Rx-8, shortages could already be evident. If someone is currently planning a purchase in the March timeframe, it may be prudent to consider moving the purchase date. When a vehicle is in short supply, prices typically climb as the demand goes up. That being the case, I would consider buying the vehicle either as soon as possible, or sometime after the supply has been replenished.
