I'm a '96 miata owner...I was thinking about getting an '08 MX-5 in the spring. But I came across an '04 RX-8 for sale. Here's the lowdown...
2004 RX-8 Grand Touring. Black w/ black int.
25,xxx miles.
still under factory waranty til April '08
powertrain warranty til April '09
pretty clean overall...but not perfect. small ding in driver's door, faded headlights, & silver trim at center console and seatbacks are scuffed /scratched a little.
new tires
originally asking $19,990...down to $17,990 as of last week.
this week..."reduced to $16,990"
Car is at a Lexus dealer and was a trade-in on a new Lexus. That leads me to believe it wasn't abused..based on your 'typical' lexus owner.

I'm worried that's it's an '04 with all the possible issues but I assume, with the warranty, I can take it in and have everything checked over.

Anything else to look for on the '04s?

Just looking for something more livable on a day to day basis...and a little more 'luxury' than my NA miata. (without giving up the killer handling)

Not a fantastic deal but not terrible. Typically 04's with 30-40K miles are in the 15-17 range. This one is on the lower mileage scale and GT so I'd say that's about right.

I would try and buy a 05, they fixed a lot of TSB's and small problems and you get an extra year of warranty. Also a lot of the 05's were originally purchased in 06 due to the factory fire. My 05 car bought in April of 06 still has 3+ years of warranty. A 04 car should be out of warranty or nearly out of warranty by now unless it had extended.

I'm also selling it right now, 05 6 MT sport with 17,350 miles if you're interested. Asking 18. I also drive a 93LE Miata daily and the RX8 feels so comfortable and plush and quiet after driving the Miata all week.
