Since car insurances KNOW we have to have it----guess what? Thats right--not much competition, underhanded tactics, misrepresentation etc etc.
Here is a true story.
A friend of my wife's was just driving ( single female) in a Honda accord. There was a policeman behind her. He ran her plates for some reason--no ticket given etc. His computer flashed that her plate number had no insurance assigned to it. He stopped her and citated her for no insurance. She went to court and the the judge gave her a $710 fine. She wasn't prepared to pay that much that day--so he put her on 12 months probation and has to pay her fine off in installments to her probation officer. If she misses one payment they will send her to jail for the remainder of the term.
She didnt have the money to get her insurance renewed the month is was due and she was on the way to work when she was pulled over.
I told her to sue the city. A person cannot be stopped or their license ran without probable cause. Since she was not citated for anything, the city doesnt have a case.
Now if the judge had accepted her explaination, required proof of insurance ( she had it by the time she went to court) and gave her a small fine--that would have been ok. But for a system to have the power to kinda ruin a person's life because they didnt have car insurance is flat wrong.
The system has gone crazy.

really dude?? have you ever been hit by someone without insurance? if f-ing sucks, and it costs YOU money even if you did absolutely nothing wrong. driving a car is a luxury, not a right. besides, what city do you live in where you NEED a car? all big cities have public transportation. so yeah, you don't need a car to live. if you can't afford the insurance, you shouldn't have the right to drive, period. at least insurance to cover the car you hit, i don't care about their own car. that's why it's a law, and it served your friend right for driving without it. wait til you get hit by some moron with no insurance, and you have to pay for it. i think you'll be singin' a different tune then.

i don't get how this infringes on our rights. the point is, driving a car can affect OTHER people, including killing them. this isn't a solitary act...anything that can potentially harm others has to be regulated.

i don't know about the legality of running plates without probable cause...never heard of that being a problem, but i'm pretty sure cops do that ALL the time.

side note: i admit i don't know much about the health insurance stuff, but you do realize that people without health insurance still have to get treated...and you/we foot the bill, right?? does that not bother you? i mean, these people w/o insurance are floating by on my/our money...so how do we fix that?? i sure as hell don't like paying for it, just like i didn't like paying my deductible when some insurance-less idiot hit my car. i'd rather see 'the right to immediate care of a person without insurance' be revoked before i'd like to see mandatory health care...but SOMETHING has to be done.

Therefore they have the right to enforce every driver to have insurance.

..staying on topic.....I guess you've never lived in a state that MANDATES you must have insurance on your car. It's not political... again...it's not political...it's common sense.

If you do any of the following things...you cost ALL THE REST OF US MONEY...
crash and go to the hospital and can't pay the bills...crash into another car, you're at fault and you can't pay other damage property and/or medical bills and/or liability claims.

THAT'S why insurance is mandatory...so your sorry backside can't inflict damage of anytype on others, directly or indirectly, monetary or otherwise. Off topic, same should go for your medical bills.

What gets my backside in a huff is that every year on MY insurance bill - I HAVE TO PAY an "Uninsured motorist" coverage charge for the freeloaders and felons that still refuse to take responsibilities for the PRIVILEGE (it's NOT a right!) of driving on the roads and just drive (drink, kill) anyway regardless of the laws!

Way too many freeloaders in this country standing behind the "it's a free country - they can't make me do this" slogan and calling themselves true Americans. Bullshit!!!

Like you say - if you can't take the responsibility - move to the country and get a horse.

thank you, spin9k!!...i thought i was going crazy there for a second reading all the crap in this thread!!

by the way, od, if your friend couldn't pay the insurance or the $700 fine, how the F*CK would she pay for the damage she would do if she cause an accident??!!??!! damage, that even in a fender bender can easily exceed $1,000!! not to mention if she injured the person, which can get VERY expensive. if you can't afford a car, and all the costs associated with it (INCLUDING INSURANCE), then you shouldn't be driving a car...i sure as hell don't want to share the road with you.

USAA got me down to $95 a month, but that's with a $1000 deductible and the lowest bodily injury premium available. What kind of bodily injury do most of you guys buy? The $10,000/$20,000? I'm thinking of paying for that one so I can get this low rate, but if I were to cause a serious accident somehow that involved major injury to someone(s)...seems like I'd be pretty fucked with a limit of only $20,000 per accident.

Here's what i'm paying. The general rule of thumb is you need to cover your assets in case you're sued. So getting 10k coverage if you have a 400k house someone will go after won't really be all that useful...

Bodily Injury
$250,000 each person............... $ 182
$500,000 each accident

Property Damage
$300,000 each accident............. $ 43

Uninsured Motorists Non-Stacked
$250,000 each person............... $ 74
$500,000 each accident

Collision
Actual Cash Value less............. $ 142
$500 deductible

Comprehensive
(Other than Collision)
Actual Cash Value less............. $ 67
$250 deductible

Personal Injury Protection
$10,000 each person each accident.. $ 37
$1000 deductible

Subtotals for your vehicles............. $ 559

This is from Travlers. GEICO was raping me.

um/uim (bodily damage)
100k/300k (per person/accident)

um/uim (property damage)
25k per accident

pip
5k

other: roadside assistance, $500 deductible (i think), loss of use $50 per day

I just moved my motorcycle insurance from GEICO to AllState. Went from $550/year down to $200/year.

Car insurance is still at Travelers, AllState couldn't match it.

If you're over 25 with no accidents then you really shouldn't be paying more than $110 - $115 a month to insure your 8...

As far as aftermarket/used parts after a collision, my body shop friend has told me that all the insurance companies are all shady like that these days, including Geico and State Farm, especially in this economy. They're all trying to get away with as many used/after market parts as possible. I'm sure that even with the 8 they'll try to put on a $200 aftermarket/remanufactured front/rear bumpers first before ordering OEM. And hopefully I never have to know from any claims department including Allstate's
in general, they are all shady.. but some are still better than others.

for example, some companies will use aftermarket condensers, but not radiators. Some will okay aftermarket fiberglass radiator supports, but not metal, and etc etc. Most won't use used/aftermarket parts if the car is relatively new.

Allstate, however, can and WILL use aftermarket as MUCH as possible. It's literally the worst when it comes to using cheap ****.

I had a brand new 2008 (new at the time) Sienna come into the shop, less than 1000 miles. Allstate chose to use aftermarket radiator, condenser, and used front bumper assembly. Customer called to complain directly, and was told to f off pretty much. really, not a one time thing either, Allstate treats both its customers and claimants like ****.

Just got back from paying my 6mo bill…

Coverage is:

Bodily injury - 250K/500K
Prop Damage - 100K
Medical Payments (per/person) - 25K
Uninsured BI - 100K/300K
Uninsured MVC - 100K/300K

Comp Deduct - 100
Collision Deduct - 500

Cost - 263.21/6months

This is through State Farm. However I also have Home, 2 other cars, Life and Business insurance through them as well so I get a savings off multiple policies. This is for a 40yo single male with no tickets/accidents (except a raccoon hit which couldn't be avoided).

I got State Farm, and I'm sort of joined with my parents, as they have been using them for at least 10-20+ years.

I'm 18yo male, with 04 8, NO accidents, NO tickets, 1 pullover.

Grand total for 6 months for just my car: $777 rounded up to $778.

I believe they considered my car a 2 door, and I think I had mentioned it was 4 door, but I think that was declined..
Would them considering it a 4 door and not a 2 door do anything for me? I don't think its very fair for the few responsible drivers like myself to get screwed over by the, ahem, bad drivers

Geico categorizes it as a 2 cylinder, 4 door compact. Seriously, it says it on the card.

Every year, I shop around for insurance quote. GEICO is always higher than what I got by a big margin. I can't understand why people would actually go with GEICO.

Geico and progressive have always been very pricey for me. I had a 99 mercury cougar that geico wanted $85-90 a month for liability insurance on.

Now with my 8 I am with statefarm, I have a 1k deductible comp / coll (only plan on using insurance if something real bad happens) and 25 / 50 coverage which should probably be higher and 50k life insurance policy and its $130-150 a month(changes slightly every month). It was actually more money without the life insurance on there.

Progressive quoted me $300 a month for the same exact coverage, minus the life insurance.

I have never had an accident and only one ticket(10 over) my whole life, im 25.

All the insurance companies are a scam. if the actuarial crap they based rates off of were really a science they'd all offer the same rates. EVERY TIME you policy is up for renewal shop around. Find a local independent insurance agent who can get you like 30 quotes in a few minutes for free. It will freaking AMAZE you how much the rates vary.

I pay $1800 / year for my own policy with Geico with maxed out benefits. That seems to be pretty good for a 21 year old?

I spoke with StateFarm giving me basic coverage but it already cost 1K more than what Im paying now.

Geico treat me pretty nice until I had to claim thru them, I had full coverage, 3 times, none of which were even my fault, they got the money back from other insurance (except one time, cuz the other guy has Geico too), after that, when my policy is up they kicked me out.

After a lot of searching, choices came down to Nationwide or Esurance. read tons of reviews they both have goods and bads but it seems that Nationwide is probably worst ever. giving you cheapest part possible even tho it doesn't work. so I went to Esurance

at first it was pretty expensive but I was like meh no choice, now Im on 2nd renewal prices came down significantly. still not as cheap as what I used to pay, but I guess I gotta wait till the accident off my record then it will be back to the way it was.
