Geico says RX8s have a worse rating now, increases premium.

I have had my '09 R3 since Oct'09 and insured with Geico. Full coverage of course. My policy just started a new 6 month period, and there has been a $60 increase. From $610 to $670ish. I emailed them and basically asked "wtf?". They said the RX8 has changed rating symbols given to it by the independent insurance rating people. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the car being discontinued. (and no I haven't gotten any tickets or claims recently, and that premium also includes my DeLorean but they didn't say that changed any)

Here's what the said exactly:
the rating symbol for your 2009 Mazda has been revised. The rating symbol helps to determine the cost of your Comprehensive and Collision coverage. The symbol reflects the cost of repairs, availability of parts, susceptibility to damage, and other factors that need to be reflected in the premium for the coverage that pays to repair your particular vehicle. We use the symbols determined by an organization called Insurance Services Office. This is an independent organization that conducts research on vehicles to determine their appropriate rating symbols. Periodically, this organization reviews already established symbols to make sure they are accurate. Your symbol was increased from a "J" to an "R" based on this research resulting in the increase of your physical damage coverage premiums.

Price drop of 04s has put the car into the hands of a different crowd. It's going to get worse

Have you considered making a 15 minute phone call? Should save you 15% or more on your car insurance...

Well according to allstate by using a 15 minute phone call policy, they might not cover you if you drive into a light post while staring at a dude that maybe looks like a girl while heading into a 3 way intersection.

My insurance went up $42 a month, i dont have full coverage though because of an accident in my old car in 08.

Luckily i got it to be lowered again because i never edited my driving mileage annually when i got my new job so that was able to bring me back down some.

Oh by the way, i have Progressive not Geico. When i called, they told me the same thing.

I wondered why i was paying ~40 extra a month than my lady and we are on the same policy, shes driving an 07 impreza. Shes had an insurance claim because someone backed into her car when it was parked in her apartment lot. I have a clean record. I guess now I know.

My insurance just went up about $50. Because I added a Miata. I am up to $247 a month for a 99 Miata, a 06 Mazda5, and my 05 8, 3 drivers, me with an extensively negative driving record, in a city at 5 times the national average for auto theft, 3rd worst in the nation in fatalities due to impairment, distraction, and failure to obay traffic signals, and coverages near maximums, $0 deductible on comprehensive, $300 deductible on collision.

You can do better.

I had been with GEICO for over 6 years. My insurance didn't change much when I sold the 8 and bought a 2010 VW TDI.

I shopped around and found EVERY other company I called had much lower rates than what GEICO was charging me.

I suspect the reason is I was under 30 when I started the policy with them, and they kept me on the higher price premium.

I literally saved $400/6 month by switching away. I called GEICO and told them, but they said the price is what the price is, they wouldn't work with me.

It would make sense that a low volume car such as the series II RX-8 would cost more to repair than a Accord. Parts are harder to get, which makes the repair take longer which keeps you in the rental car longer. Based on the number of Series 2 RX-8 Geico covers this isn't going to be a winfall for them, they would make more adding $1 to every Camry.

because insurance companies need to make money

don't give me that its different rating or whatever. if they want to jack your rates up they can bring thousands of reasons to do it.

Last year, after have been with Geico for almost 3 yrs. They cancel my policy simply because I had **** luck that year. 3 accident none of which was my fault (ppl rear "bump" me, back into my front, and a biker ran into me when I stop) and 1 speeding ticket.

oh well, I switched to esurance, Im happy. I only have another yr and 1/2 before my record becomes clean again, that time Im going to switch to allstate or Statefarm. screw u Geico. 15 minutes can save 15% my ***.

I hate GEICO anyway - they buy police laser guns so you get tickets = higher rates.

They only need the higher rates so they can keep de-thawing cavemen to use in commercials. That and the insane costs of teaching lizards to talk.

Geico would be roughly a 400% increase in rates for me. I checked. Didn't take 15 minutes.

I just got my 8 and I also have USAA. I pay $497 per six months and I'm 21... The fact that it is a "4 door" car really helps me out with them

Damn im payin $199 a month in LA for just my 8, no collision though and my comprehensive and stuff is all at the bare minimum to be legal here. Full coverege with geico would have been over $640 a month, with progressive its $520 but yeaaaaa i cant afford that so no thanks.

Going to look into USAA though and see waht my rates would be. Havent had any recent incidents and no claims since switching fron Infinity to Progressive.

I hate Geico---you are just a number to them. Best thing to do is to inlist the services of an isurance broker and dont even contact an insurance company.
Car insurance is a racket. I understand and agree that it is needed, BUT for the State government telling me I HAVE to buy it is wrong. Its the same thing as the Federal Government telling us that we have to buy Health insurance ( read the papers and realize how uncontitusional that is!)
Since car insurances KNOW we have to have it----guess what? Thats right--not much competition, underhanded tactics, misrepresentation etc etc.
Here is a true story.
A friend of my wife's was just driving ( single female) in a Honda accord. There was a policeman behind her. He ran her plates for some reason--no ticket given etc. His computer flashed that her plate number had no insurance assigned to it. He stopped her and citated her for no insurance. She went to court and the the judge gave her a $710 fine. She wasn't prepared to pay that much that day--so he put her on 12 months probation and has to pay her fine off in installments to her probation officer. If she misses one payment they will send her to jail for the remainder of the term.
She didnt have the money to get her insurance renewed the month is was due and she was on the way to work when she was pulled over.
I told her to sue the city. A person cannot be stopped or their license ran without probable cause. Since she was not citated for anything, the city doesnt have a case.
Now if the judge had accepted her explaination, required proof of insurance ( she had it by the time she went to court) and gave her a small fine--that would have been ok. But for a system to have the power to kinda ruin a person's life because they didnt have car insurance is flat wrong.
The system has gone crazy.

Stick 4 people in your 8, open all 4 doors, take a picture, or several of various angles, and submit them to Nationwide for review to see if they can dispute it.

And no, I'm not joking.

I work for the number one auto insurance company in the US. Do yuo want to know how Geico gets its customers? First 6 months premium rates is nice, its the renewal were they get you. Instead of being up front with you at the beginning, they get you hooked then pimp slap you at the next renewal.

Companies like Allstate, Statefarm first 6 months preniums are high, but at least they dont wait til the next renewal to jack you.

Plus, they give police departments radar & laser guns. This creates more tickets and then they kill you on the rate increases because you are a higher risk.
