Considering buying an RX-8

Hi all,

I've been on this forum for a little while now, trying to learn all of the ins and outs of the 8. I'm getting ready to buy a car within the next 6 months, and I'm definitely moving up market from my se-r.

I've considered the TT, S2k, older s4's, the A4, GTI, etc. The list goes on and on. But at the end of the day, what I ultmately want is all wrapped up in a sexy little package in the rx-8.

I've got one question and a few concerns.

Firstly, I put in a price inquiry online and got an offer from a dealer for a White '05 GT w/navi for $29,395, where invoice is $30,953 on edmunds.com. What do you think of this deal? I actually wanted one w/spoiler and appearance package, but I'm sure I could add a kit later on, and the mazdaspeed kit and spoiler is what I really want anyways...

Secondly, I'm a bit of an audiophile, and the presence of the bose system concerns me. I'm planning to port all of my audio hardware to my 8, but that includes an eclipse h/u that I'm convinced won't fit, along with my JL 5 channel amp, speakers, and JL 10" sub. To my understanding, upgrading the front components to a decent 6.5" component set and upgrading the rears to 6x9's or 6.5" coaxials and adding a sub should be sufficient... Anyway, I guess my concerns with the audio are 1) getting my head unit to fit in the car, 2) losing trunk space to my sub, and 3) finding a place to mount my amp (looks like the spare tire space will have to do).

Just wanted to get some feedback on the price.

Thank you all, this is an awesome community.

Price sound decent. The audio system can be modded to sound better but most manf. H/U are special made so hard to fit aftermarkets or other cars in. If your wanting the thump bass as you drive down the road don't sweat it too much. You will outgrow that before you pay the car off

have you done all your homework on all the little quirks that come with this car?

1. dont crank it up, move it and shut it down within a few seconds..you need to let it run for at least a minute before shutting down

2. you must let it warm up in the mornings, till the temp gauge starts moving
3. run 91 octane or higher gas
4. brush up on flooding procedures, tends to happen to some people
5. AT's suck! i got rid of mine cuz i hate AT's so much and got an 05 WRX (i wont listen to the wife ever again concerning cars)
6. steering wheels are non-adjustable; if you are big, then this could get annoying. i am rather big from weight lifting so it gets hard to maneuver around the wheel (my legs) even when i move my seat up and down. sometimes i have to push on my brake with my foot sideways.

The price doesnt seem bad for a fully loaded 8. mine was the full GT package minus the nav but i wont talk about the price of mine, it was screwed to begin with. good luck with your car.

wow... actually... the RX-8 has a telescopic wheel. Hahaha. The lever is a bit hidden... but it's right under the steering wheel console.

All sports cars now-a-days require 91 octane gas right? And of course 91 sucks! It's only got like... 190hp at the crank!

Well... RX-8 is definetly a fun car to drive. Test drive all the cars and just choose what you like the best. Just go with your feelings, not with what people say. That way you can be happy with YOUR decision. Not the decision someone else made for you. :-)

#2: I usually don't do this, i just do not drive it hard until it is fully warmed up, what will this do if i continue?

^^^
I've read that you just get poor fuel economy (!!!) if you don't let the car warm up just a little bit in the morning. I was also reading in the synthetic oil thread about how the increased lubrication of synthetics makes the rotary warm up even more slowly, since it's got a lower viscosity than dino oil?! Weird...

Anyway, it seems like even the Bose system is upgradeable, so that's not a huge concern of mine anymore...

I already run 91 octane in my se-r, use synthetic fluids, and pay a high enough insurance as it is, so I figure I've always paid the cost of owning a sports car, without actually owning one...

Buy it!

Actually I wonder if the price you were quoted includes the $1000 factory to dealer incentive they seem to be having on right now that nobody knows about.
