hi all, I'm about to get an rx8 so i got a quote from insurance company yesterday.

one thing that surprised me was that they will list the 8 as a sports car. I've heard from a lot of you and from the dealer salesmen that this will be listed as a 4 door sedan since it has 4 doors.

is my insurance company/broker trying to rip me off on this deal?

should i go look for another insurance company?

by the way, i'm located in NJ so i don't think i have that much shopping-around option.

I think it depends on your state and the insurance company; In Texas, through AAA, I believe the 8 is listed as a 4-door sport coupe.

I'd shop it around, of course, and see who can give you the best rates

Your insurance company is right. My dealer also told me the same thing. Sadly it was not true.

 

yea that's what i thought. you can't fool them by having two small extra doors in the back in a car that matches the performance figures of many great sports cars.

i think most of them know what an 8 can do.

 

There was a previous thread here about insurance classifications, a search might turn it up. Basically, the answer is it depends where you live! Different insurance companies in different states classify it differently. My RX-8 is officially a 4 door coupe (in Alberta, Canada).

My company also classifies the 8 as a four door coupe, but it also charges me a couple of hundred dollars a year for a "performance premium". The car seems to drive well enough to need that appellation.

 

road and track says it's a sports car. in fact i can't think of one magazine review yet that says it isn't. however my insurance company calls it a coupe

hahaha, how do you like that, a "4 Door Coupe", that's like saying you are listening to a "4 person Duet" hahaha...

They must have invented this category just for the RX-8.

 

Sports Car. Don't believe the names most companies or "experts" call it. Hell, they called the Accord a "Sports Coupe" and the RX-8 a "Sports Sedan"

I bet grampa would like the RX-8 better then coz it sounds safer, economical, and slower! :D
