2004 rx-8 | 40,626 miles

I'm looking at getting a 2004 rx-8 with 40,626 miles on it. The only thing that scares me is I know nothing my rotary motors. I will have to get studying up on it seeing how I know nothing about them. With that being said I want to get a few inputs from you guys first.

1. Is it a good deal? Out of all the searching I've been doing it seems pretty good.
2. Should I even get an rx-8? How do you guys feel about them if you had it to do all over again would you have bought a different car or would you have purchased an 8 again?
3. What are some of the pro's and cons of the car?
4. What are the main problems people run into when they boost the car? I know my last car the internals were only good to 300hp then you had to look into replacing pistons and etc is the 8 good for say 350hp? What about the auto tranny what kind of numbers can it hold?

Sorry if these have been posed around the boards I've been trying to search and read up on them as much as I can.

Thanks

1) You don't mention a price.

2) This is an entire subject to it's own. Get it because you want it and like it. The RX8 is not a drag car is what I can say. It won't be beating any mustangs/350z off the line being stock. The RX8 is a drivers car with amazing characteristics you will not find in any other similarly priced car.

3) See above.

4) To get anywhere near 350 HP on the RX8 you're looking at $6,000+ grand for a supercharger and that's not without the supporting accessories. That's speaking conservatively on a 6 port engine (MT) don't neuter yourself with an automatic unless you get one of the newer model years.

Teach yourself rotaries. Read the forums and read them again. This car may not be for you.

Wow I'm an idiot lol the price is 13,900 but I think I can talk him down to 13 even. I love the way the rx8 looks and it's kind of rare (I don't see to many of them around here). I just want to know how you guys felt about the car since you own one. I'm going to be excited to get one so I will only see the pro's and I wont see the cons until it's too late. 6k+ isn't too bad I spent about 8k in my last car to get it to about 275ish hp. I'm in the process of selling off those parts now so any money I make off of that will go towards parts for the rx8. I only want an auto because my g/f drives my car from time to time and we plan on moving in together shortly so if she needs to drive the car I want her to be able to. Thanks for your help.

Teach her to drive standard or just buy an econobox. No point in buying a car like the RX8 if you're just going to buy an automagic.

hang on, there's nothing wrong with buying a car just for its looks, especially this one! But it's gotta be 'looks > power' for you.

Just learn up a little more about the rotary and spend a day or two checking out the stickies. Auto's fine, even for T/Scharging... just not my preference to drive AT, though.

If you want an A/T, definately get a 06 or newer model if you can swing it.
