Nice pics and videos you guys. I wanna know - How'd you get 4 guys in helmets in an 8?

And I recognize Mike and Nick on the left side, but who are the other 2 of you?

Wish I coulda made it... I started auto'xing before I really learned how to drive my 8. I think I would've done a lot better. I need a HPDE!!! Maybe next time, when I have new tires..

FYI

Just a reminder that if you mash on your brakes hard for an entire day at the track, don't park on a hill and expect the e-brake to work properly. Since this happened i've talked to two other people who have done the exact same thing.

Damage was minimal. Lame though.

We definitely did a run like that, it was really entertaining, I wish we had video but those 2 pics are the only two that came out of that run. I have others in the gallery though.

 

Oh man, that sucks!! Glad the damage was minimal.

About the driving event, the 8 is a handful with 4 people in it, but it was definitely fun! I wish we had some in car video of the helmets going back and forth. I got pretty busy and accidentally hit the windshield wipers part way through when I was trying to keep the back end from coming around. We were laughing pretty hard by the end. I'll get my pictures up soon. It was an awesome event, but I wouldn't recommend washing your car beforehand if you go.

Nick, did that last video take or did the battery run out?

Here's some of the pictures I took. I didn't get a whole lot of time to take pictures, and because of the rotation(Nick was right after me) the pics were mostly of Mike. Here's some of what I got:

This old 911 was pretty awesome. It handled pretty well considering that it was around 40 years old. I think I heard somebody say it was a 1968.

This Jetta was pretty awesome to watch. I didn't get a good picture of it but the rear tire was coming way off the ground.



Fortunately the guy who was tasked with running out of the way in accident avoidance never saw this view.

 

The video of you starting the course at the end of the day goes out of focus almost immediately after the first cone It looks like it's some crappy 70's home video! I'm buying one of these in the near future, hopefully an in-car mount as well.

 

^Did you guys learn a lot? Sounds kind of cool I was thinking about putting this on my calendar for August 8. It looks like autocross stuff sorta...?

 

It was a little bit of autocross training, prep for a track and general driving skills. Good stuff.

1) Skid pad (wet)
2) Accident avoidance i.e. dodge a 60 year old man and stop in a box
3) Slalom
4) Autocross
5) Handling oval (one early apex one late apex)
6) fast slalom i.e. large boxes as gates at like ~50mph
7) Open autox

 

He couldn't judge my speed well (he blaimed it on my car being black) and kept moving early, I stopped before the box all but once, then on the last one decided not to hold a steady speed and was going like 70 when he moved... no chance to get into the box, hit a cone dead on.

In general, the schools we've been to out here have been totally worth it. I definitely thing I take slaloms faster after that school.

yeah hitting cones dead on is bad at 70, I've lost a fog light doing that

 

I was going more like 15mph by the time I hit it, I was hard into ABS (as was the purpose of the exercise), so it was either hit it with the left side of my bumper at 40mph while understeering or hit it dead on at <20mph while still braking heavily. Yah, I could smell that stop for a while afterwards

When is the next event? How much?

Actually, even if I did have good tires on this time, I wouldn't have been able to drive. Injured my right hamstring several weeks ago. Finally went to a PT today and she said I definitely tore it. I spent the last 3 days on the couch and most of last week. Keep tweaking it if I try to do too much. Right now, my car seat is a killer

Depending on when the next one is... I'm in!! Are you guys gonna do it again?

 

I think it is $55 and there are ones on July 18 and August 8. Might be there for one of them.

The schools really are the best in terms of raw seat time but I'm not sure how much I'd gain from doing the slaloms and the AutoX sections again. Is there an "intermediate" type school?

I went about 22 miles on the first 1/4 of my gas guage... so 22 miles on ~5 gallons >_> I didn't fill up until I got home intentionally but I'd done 11mpg... Totally worth it though

Tires - all I really gotta do is take all my tires/wheels down to that wheel place in Renton and have them swap my summer tires (original stock Potenzas with 9K on them) to my newer wheels (that first need buffing out from shipping issue). After that I can take a little time to buy new all-seasons and mount them on my current wheels, which need to be fixed by the wheel place - tons of curb rash

 

The alfa one is advanced driving and worthwhile

i'll probably go again since i want to try and drag some of my fam along. the july one is open to young drivers and families.

are you repairing rash on stock wheels? you're prob better just swapping with someone or selling them and buying clean ones. i suspect fixing them will be the more expensive route..

what are your new wheels anyway??

 

Sorry Mike, I should have been more specific... I have 2 sets of stock wheels - I actually like them. My original set is messed up - some by me and some by guys who changed my tires (). I bought another set from a guy on the forum in SoCal. He, and I, thought he did a good job packaging them, but he put cardboard between the wheels (face to face - 2 to each box)) and the vibration from the trip etched the cardboard lines into the wheels - I think they can be buffed out, and they have no rash. They came with his tires too, but not much tread (if anyone wants them, let me know). My original stock Potenzas have 9K on them. I changed them out for all seasons my first winter, and I've had those all seasons on since then (34K and they are almost bald - life was 25K, so not bad). I just want 2 sets - summer and winter. I was going to get new all seasons and have the wheel place do everything at once, but I'll just do one thing at a time for now.


And Chris - sorry to see your accident!

 

try clay bar on those cardboard marks. i use it on the cone rash on my wheels and it works great
