SR20DET swap

I'm interested in doing a SR20DET swap in 2005 6 speed manual.
Pros:
- Able 350-400 w.h.p. bolt ons
-Keep steering in tact
-Fittable fit in with little modification engine bay and frame.
-Transmission and gearing while different able to swap in 3.91 RX7. Able to use SR20DET manual transmission still cheaper than Ford 8.8 swap.
swap.
Cons:
-Wiring probably have to go with Megasqurit
-Lack of support
-Design most of the mounts myself
-Custome piping and routing
I understand some people prefer the rotary engine and I think it's cool concept. I just thinking of different path. Thank you for any input.

Personally, Id use Adaptronic Modular PNP. It is a can bus ECU ( Yes there are other CAN BUS ecu's out there not sure what is involved to get them to work) and everything works like factory once installed.

I hope you have better luck than i had trying to find a 3.9 Automatic Rx7 ring and pinion. I had to settle for a 4.1 5 Speed Rx7 ring and pinion.

Im not sure how the transmission of choice is going to affect you having to spend $ on a ford 8.8 swap, because they make PPF Delete kits for the stock rx8 differential. The stock diff is more than capable of holding whatever a Sr20 is going to throw it. Axles are the weakest link back there.

Keeping the stock steering intact is going to at the very least involve buying a kit to drop the rack, bump steer kit and rear sump oil pan whether one is available or custom.

And just a little info here, there are many cars out there that have the Aisin AZ6 Transmission ( S2000, Miata, Rx8, Sr20, Altezza, The FRS and BRZ have a similar tranny but it is to far removed to swap parts from). That being said, If you were to buy a 6 speed version of the Sr20, you can just swap tail housings and shift linkages Between the rx8/Sr20 trannys (Maybe a few more small parts) and it will just bolt right to the rx8 PPF which just leaves you with the motor mounts and other things i mentioned earlier (Providing there isnt anything on the back of the Sr20 head to foul out on the firewall.) I had played around with swapping a Renesis in a NB Miata with the AZ6 and the parts swapping works. And the Sr20's exhaust is on the opposite side, so there is that to deal

Hey Guys,

I am currently doing this swap, it was relatively easy in sense the motor fits with little modifications to the chassis, I was able to use source an s15 6-speed trains that share the similar (Aisin AZ6 Transmission ) internals which allowed me to swap the rx8 tailshafts with the s15 one which allowed me to bolt the trans right up. Just as@RGT84 had mentioned. you are able to retain the stock steering rack by just dropping the rack approx 3in down. I am currently using an FC rx7 throttle pedal and should bolt up with little modification to the steering column grommet. I am currently working on wiring it all up. I am trying to do my best to document the process to provide a detailed HOW TO.

the 3.909 r&p is still sold through Auto Craft Evolution. It’s typically around $950.

I'm kind of surprised to see people bothering with an ancient engine like the SR20 when more modern, powerful, cheaper alternatives exist within the Mazda family. But I'm biased

Seems like a much easier swap than your own without all the chopping/massaging/fabrication mods, but that transmission is a pretty weak link. A gearset could resolve most of that, but it’s probably $5,500 installed. It doesn’t require any custom fitment/installation based on what they’re saying though.

I don't like the sound of this "drop the steering rack a few inches" though it sounds like it's largely the same as mine. Custom mounts, different trans, etc. Nothing rocket sciencey

Well you’re probably right, I overlooked that thinking more of the firewall and drivetrain stuff. I suppose we’ll get a better idea once the information is posted. Looking forward to seeing more.

95% of these swap threads end up going nowhere when people come to the realization that it's a lot of work and money no matter how you slice it, but I'm interested in seeing how it develops as well.

Considering the OP never commented on this thread in over a year tells you how they pretty much go.
