On another note :/

The engine doesn’t make a car. If Mazda had made the RX-8 with a 2.3-litre turbocharged Duratec, they’d still be selling them now. What a good car that would have been! In fact, Craig is building an RX-8 for his next car, but we’ll save that story for another day…

Didn't Mazda make a 4 door sedan with a 2.3L turbocharged Duratec?

Didn't it only last 2 years?

No, not particularly unreliable. The V6 was the hugely unreliable Mazda6 engine. Worse than the Renesis, though it gets zero press or bad rap for it. The Ford V6 Duratec is rather horrific in reliability. Numerous dealer techs have agreed that they were swapping V6s at a rate of 5 - 8 times more frequently than 13B-MSPs.

But yeah, the Mazdaspeed6 was a 4 door sedan of about the same size as the RX-8, it gained a bunch of weight due to the AWD and the heavier engine package. According to that swap type reasoning, it should have outsold the RX-8 and would still be getting sold today.

When actually it sold decently in 2006, barely at all in 2007, and was halted after only 2 model years due to poor sales.

Kinda 'proof is in the pudding' type statement.

For full disclosure, how many v6 of that type were sold? Would you say 5-8x more?

Doubtful, but I'll dig into it. The references were the V6s in Mazda6s, not Ford techs, so the comparable counts would be the Mazda6 sales vs RX-8 sales. They will be higher for sure, but I doubt by even as high as a factor of 5. I'm willing to be wrong though, i'll see what I can find.

Agreed, that blue oval V6 was/is a turd. Friend of mine has one. I didnt' think it was possible for any engine to have more carbon problems than a lightly driven rotary. But, that v6 takes the cake. Front and rear main seals were also made of tissue paper...

I had a speed6 for almost 4 years. Fantastic car to drive as a daily driver, ESPECIALLY in the snow, but man did it fall on it's face WELL short of redline. It was no fun at the track and it started to develop reliability issues at 80k. Wheel bearings, shocks, turbo seals all went out around that same time. Plus that stock HPFP was really sketchy...

It did handle amazingly well for a sedan. I liked the 2.3MZR, i think it got better over the years, reliability wise. I think the reason the speed6 didnt sell well is because if its perceved competition being the STI and EVO, which it was never intended to directly compete with...and the fact that it didnt have an automatic option...for better or worse, automatics sell.

And none of them were willing to bid up to his reserve. Shocking.

He was positive he could turn a profit.

To be fair, those were posted by a shop in New England. The "Joker's work" reference was not literal.

Still....

No, the shop was supposed to fix it.

The caption the pics came with originally:
Courtesy of <redacted>. The customer went rogue on his own before seeking professional help.
and

There is no way I could not share this...this is an E46 325 with M3 style front and rear bumpers and a makeshift rear exhaust. The owner wanted to know if we could fix it so it didn't hang so low.

I laughed out loud when I saw this.
The shoe still fits.
