Real racers use power to weight ratio

Muscle car guys use torque to gas mileage ratio.

well, for starters i think you forgot a few words in that post, since i'm not sure what either of the 2 trailing sentances mean.

I usually don't get attracted to drama but this post intrigued me. You joined a forum of rotor heads but assert that rotaries are junk admired by a strange breed. What did you expect? I, for one, am one of the strange that love the rotary and personally have no interest in swapping with something non-rotary. To each his own, and I respect that, but damn dude, don't be an asshat with your statements.

End story

Rotary = unreliable, weak, and with little too for potential

V8 = powerful, reliable, and loads of potential(supercharger, hell even headers accually make noticeable gains) but $$,$$$

i6 = competitive hp/tq, reliable fair potential (higher boost) and $,$$$

i4 = renny comparable power, reliable, low potential, and $,$$$

Sooooo you tell me what makes sense,,,,, dyno curves! Dyno Curves!! DYNO CURVES!

Then why are you stoping with a v8? Theres a lot bigger things that will give better dyno curves out there.

That rang true. I guess im surprised I actually bought and own a rotary car that I have to make sure that everyone everywhere knows how's much I hate it and how the V8 in its place is better. Lol. Maybe I'm just making sure I say it so I can hear it. Lol who knows. Let's get back to swap bashing

Im not trying to brag about running up to 28,000 rpm, but your itty bitty larger torque band is not worth much compared to a nice long decent torque band.

Specific output says a lot. If someone built a 6 rotary rotary that had 600hp and 600 torque with out really pushing the engine it would blow your lsx away.

Bragging about having more power just because you bought a bigger engine is a pretty drag racer thing to do.

Ooh your car can beat mine but only for a quarter mile before it needs a rebuild. Yeah thats reliable.

If someone built a 6 rotor then you'd need an XJS or a VERY long car to package it which would weigh a ton. Also it's a foolish thing to compare rotaries to the notoriously long lived LS platform. And to the guy with the gas mileage statement. Seriously? Perhaps you should look at the real world numbers on fuel mileage. Rotaries get horrible gas mileage and that's not even mentioning the oil mileage.

An RX8 with a V8 that doesn't run is not better than a Renesis powered one that does.
I've been driving and enjoying mine nearly everyday for 2 1/2 years now.
That is better.

I think ur misinterpreting the rotary for the flaws in design of everything mazda does to their cars for the sake of damn emissions!

Take the fd for instance, in stock attire it needs the engine rebuilt at around 100,000kms, BUT, with a few simple changes to the intake, intercooler and radiator made to the car within the first 5000kms u can expect it to last double, maybe triple that. The fault not lies with the engine but design flaws in cooling n intake. (Don't let me forget the cat)'

Likewise the renesis suffers from numerous rx8 design flaws.
Cat convertor, intake, radiator position etc.
Tho I admit they failed also with the Rene exhaust ports.

In summary, all these engine are capable of outlasting ur "little sack ls1" and blasting it with very minor mods- how???

Let them breath- it's the nature of the rotor beast. They love to spin n they love to breath.

As for torque, 3rotor plus BIG **** turbo equals **** ur pants power!!!

So unless u actually know the facts, don't slag off about rotors mate, coz ur clueless.

Go find a real car with a 20b big turbo, take it for a drive, then come back here and tell us ur opinion, otherwise it has been noted, u don't like rotors and u are not ready yet to see the light.

hallelujah!! N amen.

I am sufficiently curious as to why LSXREX hates rotaries in the first place. Is there any personal experience involved or are you stating opinions as facts based on word of mouth?

Apparently you didn't actually comprehend what I wrote, which was:

I wasn't making any statement as to the gas mileage of one engine over another, merely that muscle car guys always evaluate engines based on torque vs gas mileage. You have been doing it all over the place. It's why you rate the rotary low (low torque, low mileage) and the LS high (high torque, high mileage).

This is compared to road racers, which primarily use power to weight.

So you can stick a big engine in an insanely heavy car, and the weight of the car doesn't mean anything to you, and neither does the actual power output. It's all about torque, and all about gas mileage.

For us, we don't care too much about torque, or about gas mileage. Power, area under the curve, and maximizing it with less weight is more important to us. Low torque high reving engines are inherently better at road racing (all else being equal) because it is substantially less drivetrain strain, which means much less bulky parts are needed, which means lower overall vehicle weight.

Reading comprehension is a good thing.

See above. He doesn't value revs or area under the curve, just torque and gas mileage. Every good attribute of the rotary is one he places zero value in, and every poor attribute of the rotary is one he places high value in.

It's not really a surprise.

My main question is why he (along with virtually every other muscle car guy i've encountered) are incapable of acknowledging that they aren't the only people that enjoy cars, and that there are other people out there with different and equally valid opinions. Even ricers, stancers, etc... usually understand and appreciate why someone would like any specific engine, even if they don't.

It's only the muscle car guys that walk around with a blinding arrogance that refuses to accept the diversity of the automotive enthusiast world.

while I was in school (mechanical engineering) everyone had a soft spot for the wankel, if they didn't they either a) flunked out or b) transferred to some bs degree like liberal arts

all the engineers I know and relate to with work or personal like/appreciate the wankel even with its shortcomings (including one who is a die hard mopar man)
