Well as far as flux goes for the standard 200 dollars welder is you don't use gas..just get the wire and go. It pulls about 20 amps of power on high and about 15 on low.

The flux unless you buy a good only has high and low.

For mine high is good to about 3/8 inch...any bigger you need to take a torch and get the metal hot before welding it.....that or if you don't mind putting down some bubble gum then your good to go.

If I'm welding thick stuff I normally don't move very quick and I do a rather wide weld...the reason is to heat it up good and make a solid weld.

tig can weld just about anything you throw at it.

Um oh thing I like about flux.....you don't have to be close. If you was in a spot and can't get to it well you can actually let the wire extend say 3 inches out of the end and still weld it solid.

But really if you ask me if you welding just the standard stuff then flux the way to go.

I tig weld for a living and have my masters from Tulsa Welding School flux is fast and dirty that said tig is much stronger and lighter seeing as you would be using less rod. I had a guy pay me very well to tig his whole roll cage in his dirt track car just so he could save a few pounds. I fab my own exhaust with stainless rod and so far no craks our rust tig holds up to heat very well

Like i said ---just pretty it up
Got to admit--you do solve problems dude--and if you do loose a little power in the higher rpms---so what? You have PLENTY to begin with. Other than Pro Shops with lots of resources, money and time i have never seen a build go exactly as planned.
I remember in 1968 I dropped the aluminum head 396 into a 55 chevy. I used jardine headers. Ended up having to crush one pipe a little to clear something--i have forgotten what.
Still that was a bad *** car. 11's in the 1/4 (remember this is 1968) and i had to stop at the end of the strip with the oem 55 drum brakes---hell that was the most exciting part!
Back to back runs were impossible.

+1 this build has really gone exceptionally well and you have been able to create/solve problems very easy!

This build makes my rotary heart hurt. It's like putting a flat head Ford in a Z06.

You go too far!

Though its not THAT bad. As much as its blashpemy, it is infact a very big upgrade in power. No one would put a ford engine in a Z06....Because if they did, I'd come to their house and kick them square in the nuts.

Not having to deal with all this myself on my swap is great, but my custom headers cost about a thousand bucks. looks good man.

Can't really understand why you would want to put a piston driven engine in an RX8. This is the only rotary powered car in production. The rotary engine is what sells the car. I could understand if you were swapping engines in a civic. Regardless, to each their own. I love HP! I subscibed just out of curiosity.

Some buy the car cause of the rotary. I bought the car cause when I drove by it...it caught my eye. I had never seen a car that looked like this one. I'm 1 of about 10 in a 250 mile radius that I know of and I'm part of a local rx8 club. The closest one to me that I know of is about 30 miles away and I see it parked in the same spot everyday as this persons work.

But anyways the motor had really no input on me buying it. I thought the price was good. I liked the looks and when I took it for a test drive it handled well and was fun to drive.

But as time went on I wanted more from this little engine and running boost and spending gobs of money on a motor that everyone will tell you isn't reliable when being pushed is well....running water down the drain...a waste of money. If I made 75k or better a year that'd be fine. Hell if I made 50k I'd do with it. But when I make under 30k....this motor in this car is way over my head.

My total cost as of right now is 6k and I've used 10 pounds of weld on this thing..so for those that know 10 pounds is a lot. and for those you have seen a big spool that's like the size of a bowling ball around...I've used that much wire.

But all in all though guys I might handle problems as they pop up and move along like it isn't a big deal cause to me it isn't. I don't worry about getting every bit of hp out of the engine so my designs are simple and easy.

As far as the headers like he said 1000 dollars in headers OUCH. I paid a whole 20 dollars for the used headers that I cut up and then got 40 bucks in pipe. So my headers are 60 dollars and about 15 - 20 hours of fab and welding.

Haha, just wait until your Renesis goes out on you and it takes Mazda months to replace under warranty and then I bet you will be cursing the low power, low torque spin-o-matic. The rotary engine is not what sells the car at all, the renesis is higher maintenance and lower power than its cylinder brothers, just try lining up against a mazdaspeed 3 sometime, the renesis is fun to rev to 9k but the terrible tranny can't handle that for very long. Don't get me wrong I love my RX-8 just as much as the next guy, but come on be realistic, the renesis is not that great of an engine, it is not reliable by any means, and certainly is not a selling point..... yeah um the engine has an extended 100k warranty on it because sadly you will probably need it, and good luck after that RX-8 is definitely a fun car, but the engine is not one of its strong suits, in fact it is probably the weakest link, well that and the tranny.....

9k--i know you are a purist and thats great dude--i like fooling around with this engine too, but like the man has honestly said--its not reliable enough for what he wants to do. Now you are a Bro and all that but ---give this man a lot of respect.
He wants 400+ whp--the Renasis cant do that on the street yet and be a DD?
He also is a purist in a way-- i know what he is doing. He is a true "Hot Rodder" , follows the KISS rule and works with what he has. If he doesnt have it then he makes it.
Even if there is trouble with his build--MM's etc he will get that figured out and fixed.
By now he probably has so many burns on his arms that he has to use a whole rube of neosporin a day!
This guy has my respect and with $1 added you can buy a cup of coffee.
Yall have any idea how difficult it is to just get an engined lined up properly--has anyone here dropped a different engine in a car? With no prefabbed parts? Aint as easy as it looks.
And dealing with a 1st born and post delivery Momma at the same time!!
Daymmnnn.

Oh, I respect the work and his work ethic. I have done swaps before and even with some prefabbed mounts, etc. It still isn't easy. This one just doesn't make sense to me because I think when you mold old school and new school there is a fine line between Hot Rod awesomeness and disaster

But, we shall see. If he follows through and gets it all buttoned up then I will be a believer. Who cares what I think anyway

But I totally respect the shade tree attitude and red neck engineering because that is the way I learned to spin a wrench.

didnt know you had done swaps? cool.
yep it is a fine line--youre right. but a first step is always taken and then it either grows from there or its dropped.
I remember people trying to stuff v/8's into dd Chevy Vegas--didnt work out to good.

That's not a bad price when you consider NON-custom, "mass-produced" LS1/2/3 headers like Kooks and American Racing cost more than a thousand dollars!

I think it's rude that Mazda didn't engineer the RX8 to accommodate a V8 more easily.

Bastards.

Yeah I have swapped a few SOHC Honda motors for DOHC VTEC motors in my old CRX and Civic and I have helped a friend with a 5.0 swap into a Ford Falcon. Funny you mention Vega's, my dad had an old Vega. It was death trap but man it was fast.

I really hope follows through with this. I just hate to see these kind fo swaps fizzle out or get running but then nothing else works.

well I ended up having to take the starter and my oil pan off just to install the passenger side header. My mom bought my clutch disc for me today lol So since that being said I'll install my clutch and transmission and I plan on pulling her out of the garage tomorrow.

Now I still just have headers...so it's going to be loud but atleast now the exhaust is blowing down on the ground...and I have some type of a exhaust...instead of straight out of the head.

Everyone can look forward to a video tomorrow!!!!

EDIT!!!!

Gosh what a pain in my ***...lol. So I now have a good flywheel that's usable and then I have a good 6 puck rigid disc that's ready to rock.....and I finally have the right style of pressure plate but not the right one for this flywheel went to install it around 8 or so and was very disappointed.

4 TIMES this clutch has been wrong. I'm this time taking everything to him. Flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate and telling him not to call me till he figures it out!!!!

What ratio rocker arms?
What is the max lift your valves and springs can handle?

max lift is .55 or .56 can't remember....I'm on the edge of it.

But just to let everyone know I got my pressure plate today and I stuck in the transmission and driveshaft.

I'm not sure about the rx8's master cylinder....I installed the clutch and I know it's moving but the peddle just seems way to soft for a 3000 pound hold pressure plate. Maybe it's not I don't know we will find out tomorrow when I start the car!!!!

But anyways like I was saying everything is in except the bracing for the transmission it's got a jack under it. But the PPF goes in tomorrow and who knows I might make the other support under the transmission but then again...depends on this clutch cause I so want to drive the car atleast around the block and yes there will be video.

you have got to be kidding on that gearshift!
Sweet dude--really sweet--i was afraid it was going to be kinda tall. just 1" further back and it would be like oem.

You may want to add that brace now before you finish the exhaust?
You know you are going to need it specially with those solid mounts and no give.

Clutch bracket adjusted ok--pressure plate moving full range?
You putting a 4 point front stabilizer bar? Dont break a windshield now.
