dude dont post just to bash the op.
Its cool you have your beliefs but wouldnt it be a dull world if everyone thought the same thing.
I like people that go out and do something new on their own.

I agree and disagree. The rotary is unique and different...but the motor is just so unreliable and requires very strict maintenance and then on top of that strict things when driving the car. Adding oil and it using oil I don't have a problem with but the fact you have to keep oil in it to keep the parts from wearing out.....Then even after you've done this if you a daily driver your doing good to get 80,000 and if you drive hard and race your looking at a new motor at like 30 or 40 there's so many people replacing engines at 20k. The car is different and unique but the car isnt just the motor. Features and it's handling, it's looks. Those are the things I bought it for. I thought the rotary was fun...but two motors later the rotary is no longer fun...it's a piece of shit to me. A car that was worth 18k when I bought it and is only worth now about 10k in two years and two motors. The cost of redoing the motor and maintenance is ridiculous

E.M.S. 03-27-2010 04:00 PM

do what you want dude, you bought it you break it is how i feel. who cares what johnny shit his pants has to say....put a rocket in it and blow it the fuck up. i don't care but if you do take video cuz i want to watch it.

olddragger 03-27-2010 09:23 PM

yea a hear ya about reliability--- i think and i hope some of those issues affecting that have been worked out.
i think a lot of people dont accept the limits of the engine (not you) and dont know how to drive it and/or care for it.

besides the wires needing cleaned up...this is pretty well what the engine bay is going to look like

YaXMaNGTO 03-28-2010 10:14 AM

that is awesome, man! it's not too easy to tell from the pics, but it looks like it's really sitting down in there nicely. What kind of hood are you going to need? Too early to tell?

And, hey, what's that blue round thing with the blue wires coming out of it? what does it do?

olddragger 03-28-2010 10:24 AM

lol!!!
Dude the engine placement is sick--really sick--AND you have a stand up radiator!
So all the steering cleared?
I see a really sweet windshield area cai in the future.
Going to stay with the distributor--and not go with crank driven?
I take it the firewall/cap has plenty of clearance?
fuel regulator? is it under the car?
I sure would like a under the car view of the mounts/pan and exhaust.
Glad you got well so fast.

Talic 03-28-2010 10:49 AM

please tell me you are kidding YaXManGTO
its a distribuator.
unlike our modernedized RX8
he has to use a capacitor or a coil to create the high power spark
the distruator rotates around stricking each wire which goes to each piston
the wire carries the power to the spark plug
and kaboom!

its done just like ours but ours is computer controlled and the coil goes directly to the wire/plug, and we need a coil for each plug were as he needs one big one

mscamp02 03-28-2010 11:00 AM

very very nice, looks like you got it placed perfectly from teh pics but its still hard to tell.

Talic 03-28-2010 11:00 AM

dont tempt me oldragger
i have a nice 440 blown motor that could easily go in
i can see a blowebelt/blower and duelinlinecarbs sticking out of an rx8
and a tubbed rear end.............

Fate710 03-28-2010 11:19 AM

There was a local guy when I lived back in Indiana that was going that to a RX8. His son wrecked the car, he bought it off of him, and he said he was sticking a built BBC in it. Never saw it though......

olddragger 03-28-2010 05:52 PM

oldschool!!!
damn nice and those where the days
better get some traction/wheelie bars under there?:)
remember the old "Rat Flink" character with the big blower sticking out of a small sports car?
Snap!

Talic 03-29-2010 12:24 AM

actually shes getting a 4 link system and wheelie bars from magnumaforce
but i gotta get back to canada to do that. see my signature for its build
anyways back to outinnowhere3193's thread

The top of the valve covers are are the bottom of the flat areas under the hood.

As far as the hood goes man it's staying stock...there's about 2 inch gap between the radiator and hood and I'd say 4 between the top of the carb filter and hood.

The steering got moved forward...infront of the pulleys... it was kinda tricky really. I ended up cutting my tie rods and extended them for the extra reach.

As far as the distributor there's nothing to worry about...and the wiring is simple. Nothing really to go long. A MSD distributor is good for around 800 hp or so without a amplifier.

As far as the firewall and everything else I didn't cut or beat in any of the fire wall it's all free and clear.

I made my own pan that sits right now about 3 inches from the ground.

The regulator will be mounted there in the hood area. I've been trying to piece it all together as quick as possible. Instead of buying new metal and what not I've said on cost with things I have sitting around the house.

But all and all I plan on STARTING THE CAR TOMORROW!!!!!! and taking it for a drive come tuesday or wed..

man I hate this small space for the passenger side exhaust lol. I fought it all day trying to get something that would work. The header I had wasn't going to work and I was just going to make a new one...but I ran out of oxygen for my torch so I said screw it I'd go with stock manifolds and those won't work cause I got straight plug instead of angle. The boot of the plug wire touches the manifold. So I keep fighting it and I just can't seem to get anywhere.

But on the bright side I didn't get it on video but the engine runs great. I expected it to smoke a little when I started it and there was nothing. It only ran for about 30 seconds though for I had pulled the relay out for the fuel pump....so it died and my starter took a crap when the engine hit compression.

kinda funny really.....The compression kick broke the tip of the starter....like a whole chunk flew. But here is a few pictures of the pretty well finished product.

Yes, I know what a distributor is....

I've replaced plenty of distributor caps and rotors in my days... I'm not a spring chicken... but definitely not as old as olddragger. :suspect:

Crap. Sorry to hear that's being a pain in the ass. :anger:

how did you do this - please dont say cut and weld .....

lol yes cut and weld. I figured out how it needed to be shaped and the length. I cut it into and then yes....welded it back together.

I was actually sightly off and needed to bend it just about a 1/8 inch or a 1/4 I tried to heat it up and bend it. I couldn't budge it....with a 3 foot cheater bar. So I'm not scared one bit of it breaking.

and yes in the picture I hadn't put the rubber part on the tie rod again..... I'm also going to sleeve the tie rod with a piece of pipe that was my beginning thoughts on the tie rod spice and remake.

olddragger 03-30-2010 08:31 AM

that looks so damn good dude.
Interested in how the steering is going be?

Maybe one suggestion?
The brake line on the passenger fron looks close to where the exhaust header is going to be?
May want to relocate that a little? Brake lines dont like heat very much:)
500hp engine does need a good set of headers.
As my Dad used to say--a lot of people get rushed when a project is almost done. Thats just the time that more attention is needed for the details that make such a difference.
Na no smoke with the new assembly lubes etc.

Yeah even when I decided to use the oem manifold.... I even heat wrapped it. I got to thinking and I think I know how I can make it work. If I change the angle of the flange then it will clear the plugs nicely...then the only thing I'd be worried about is the exit. But if I don't do to much I think everything will work great.

I bowl in a league tonight so my day is pretty well a waste cause I'm going to go get another starter and that's a 30 minute drive just to do that...and then the car is another 15 minutes away.

But I'm still hoping to pull it out say wed.

Even if it is a short drive to my house to where I can work on it easier.

Oh and as far as the steering from what I measured out the wheels turn just as far if not farther. I know to the left I can turn one inch farther then to the right. But to the left it would turn more but it's as far as the tire will turn. The reason I can turn a inch farther the one way is cause...like I said my angle was wrong I needed a slight bend to fix it and I couldn't get it to bend. Actually I used my cherry picker to hold the other end and I bent the framing of the cherry picker instead of bending the tie rod.

But anyways the point is I could turn the wheel another 1 I'm guessing but I bump steer. The rim hits the tie rod. But if I'd upgrade to 19 inch rims or go staggard just a hair or drop from a 9 inch back to a 8 inch rim. You know so many ways to get it to turn all the way.

kersh4w 03-30-2010 05:37 PM

looking good man. cant wait for video.

diabolical1 03-31-2010 08:12 AM

awesome project you've got going. it's not really my cup of tea, but i definitely admire and respect it. i think hearing an unruly Chevy rumble coming from an Rx-8 would be sort of like sniffing a sexy, woman's underwear. you know it's wrong, but it still makes you tingle in the right places.

good job. :)

outinnowhere3193 03-31-2010 09:38 AM

Well unfortunately the car won't drive till thursday lol. I finished up everything last night up to the transmission. I stuck the pressure plate on and went to put the throw out bearing on the trans and I was like this isn't right and then I grabbed the old pressure plate. My trans guys goofed. He gave me a push style and this trans uses the pull style clutch. So I'll have my clutch first thing in the morning. But oh well that's just more garage running time. I'll post a video later today of her running.

I still don't have exhaust but I figured I'd get her home and then in about 2 weeks I would be able to afford a exhaust. But till then I don't have any money.

Mawnee 03-31-2010 12:06 PM

This project is growing on me more and more. I really like the LS2 swap route, but you cannot deny the simplicity of this approach. :icon_tup:
