I started in 2004 in a startup that paid no money for about a year and didn't go anywhere, except people from that team spread all over the industry (the core team is now known as Studio Wildcard). It fell into my lap, just dumb luck. At the same time I started a mod that I did get paid for when it was picked up as a paid expansion. Right place, right time. Then a bunch of contract work and teaching until 2007 when I got an actual studio job. So you just kinda have to start and see where it takes you.

Location has a lot to do with it, Montreal has a lot of gaming companies, startups, interest groups, etc.

I have several friends that currently or formerly work for Volition.

Most of them are artists, programmers or both.

Maybe a related subject.
I saw a short story yesterday about Handiwork, may explain why so many of us, even with various occupations, enjoy working on our cars.

I work in the consumer products and OTC drug industry as an R&D engineer on upstream process development activities. Everything from 1 liter batches of detergent in the semi-works plant to 10000 liter ferments for a medical product at a full-scale plant.
