Transmission seal removal

Does everything black come out or just the rubber ring in the back? Also what's the best way to remover it? The outermost black plastic is really rough and was wondering if that comes out also, with the seal? See the pic.

It’s an outer metal casing where it’s pressed into the rear of the tailhousing with an inner rubber seal. You should be able to see the metal flange of the seal around the end of the tailhousing. Here is what the replacement looks like to help you visualize it better:

they make a special lever-hook tool for popping it out, but you usually start with a small flat head screw driver and tap it in lightly between the seal flange and the tailshaft end and then start leveraging it out. Once you get it started then you can move to a larger screw driver. Some people start with a larger screwdriver and sort of punch it off. First seal replaced in this video

be sure to drain the oil out first or be prepared for what comes out

it also pointed out in the video that the seal usually has a top/bottom orientation for proper installation
