Transmission/propeller shaft oil leak

Hi Guys,

i have done alot reading from this forum and it has really helped me alot. I managed to fix alot of this in my rx8 esp the power window and other stuff just by reading .

Just a intro, im chris and i bought my rx8 earlier this year, its a 2004/2005 model with about 65,000km++, im the third owner of the car and judging from her state she wasnt really taken good care of. that was till i bought her, fixed most of the problems such as rough idling, power windows not working, replace 2 ignition coils, etc. and i just love how she handles.

well enough about that, i got one problem now and i really need all the help and advice i can get. two days ago i send it for some general servicing (still got free servicing package and parts) and since its the only place where i can have it lifted i just did some inspection on my own. i notice somewhere around the propeller shaft(the one long pipe that connects from the tranny to the diff) somewhere in between there is an oil leak, now im not sure the extent of the leak although the mechanic says its just not bad (to me any leak is bad, small or big).

now i just need to know if the shaft that connects to the tranny has any kind of rubber seal, and if so, have you guys ever has such leaking problems? and if any of you who are working on your trannys can show me some pics of how it looks like?. i will post up some pics of the leak just to show you guys but for now any advice would do. Also im quite tempted to take it apart just to see where the leak is actually coming from.

this is one of the guide that shows me how to remove it, but it doesnt really tell in detail about whats inside, im assuming some rubber seal that prevents the oil from coming out from the tranny and it doesnt say what to take out or remove.

PS: i need help guys, so please i ask not to bash me up ^^.

They're is a seal in the tailsgaft of the transmission...i it's likely what is leaking by your description. It is a $30 part and easy to replace. You just need to remove the shaft. ...pry out the seal with a screwdriver and tap in a new one :-)

You don't need to remove the tailshaft....just remove the driveshaft and remove the seal.

You can pit a bit of grease on the lips of the seal if you want..

This is super simple. ..don't get all complicated on it :-)

You may have confused the OP with your reference to tailshaft/driveshaft, in most English speaking countries, depending on location, the driveshaft/tailshaft/propshaft are the same thing.
OP, when you attempt this repair, drain the oil from the tranny first.

Thanks again bro, yes i was reading through that, if u see in the pic it is item no.1 which is a 49 B025 001. it doesnt speak much about how it looked like. i did a google search on that part with not the exact pic. will be going to the parts store to see if they have it. who knows how much its gonna cost :S

about that you are right, wasnt that i was confused, just wanted to be sure haha. when i mentioned drive shaft they thought it was the one that connects from the tyres to the engine. thats why i use driveshaft/propeller shaft ^^ haha.

If you have a 6 speed manual tranny, this is the part # for the seal R50117335A .The shaft from differential to rear hub/wheel is called an axle.

You don't need a special tool...if you find a socket the correct diameter it works just fine
