UK Starter change without battery disconect

I have a new starter to fit, but the car is imported with no manuals. I really don't want the radio to loose its code.
obviously not ideal, but cautiously can I change it without disconnecting the battery? what is the possibility of any damage to components.
I don't expect anyone to condone this way of doing things, but if you had to do it this way what precautions should one take.
Many Thanks
Matt

It's virtually impossible without big risk. Of all the electrical lines in the car, the one from the battery to the starter carries the most current and is always-on. Even if you can manage to avoid touching any metal tool to any other metal component to ground the circuit, the completely live line bouncing and dangling around all the other metal down there is just begging for a big arc and blown fuses at best.

Disconnect the battery.

Don't do it.

You risk personal injury as well as damage to the car, not worth it. Get the codes before you disconnect. One day you will have to change the battery any way.

If you really must do this without disconnecting the batt rap the ends of the wires with really heavy electrical tape as you take them off not after put as soon as you disconnect them to reduce the risk of shorting out the car or hurting your self. To reduce risk of shorting the car or hurting your self when removing the wires wrap your tools in a heavy cloth or pice of leather still not a guaranty you won't do damage but if you have no other choice that's all I can think of to help. Your best option is to do as stated above.

AFAIK the radio doesn't have a code. You are retarded if you attempt to change the starter without disconnecting the battery.

1.

You guys do realize that the radio in the 8 can be locked w/ a code right? It requires a key sequence to enable the lock, then from then on, anytime the battery is disconnected the screen will display 'ERR' and require you to unlock it. More common in JDM 8's

I wonder when this is enabled because I have swapped many stock headunits between different year RX-8's and have never seen this "ERR" code.

My radio only locked out when I removed the radio, never had that come up when disconnecting the battery. Whatever you do, don't attempt to do this without disconnecting the battery.

Insulate the cable well, also, insulate you tools with some tape. I lit up my ratchet that way.
