Rx 8 Clutch/shifting issue's.

Hey guys Happy to be a member! I have been a Nissan guy for over 20 years but i just traded my 350z for an rx8 do to the fact it has a functional back seat! I owned a few 7's back in the 80's and boy things have changed, Must say i hated the car the first day but as i adjusted my driving ability i can honestly say i may stay with the rotor for a long time to come... It really is a blast... i read a great deal of info on here over the last 4 days and have decided that if the info i need is here, i am to thick to locate it......

From time to time when i shift from 4th to 5th it locks me out of all gears until i come to a complete stop, maybe 1 out of every 40 shifts to 5th..... Did have a cel that read out as the CLUTCH SWITCH... I have replaced and cleared the codes and there is no changer in symptoms.... Has anyone ever encountered this?

On a side note its a 2004 6mt with 80k and seems very well maintained, compression came back good, and this weekend will be a preventative cooling system flush and overhaul, plugs, wires, and coils... Is there any other added PM that i should perform that i have not found on here? Thanks for all the help in advance!

Hey Welcom to the forum,,

The new members forum is desinged to assist newbies with issues they encounter and protect them from being flamed. I have been an 8 owener for over a year now and still sticking to this forum :-)

I have never come across or even heard of such issue you are experiencing. I guess, like myself others have been waiting for one of the experienced members to chime in with their knowledge.

Hopefully, someone with more nowledge will point you in a better direction.\

Cheers

I've had problems with something like this but found my primary problem has been due to a swelling rubber clutch line. This might not be your problem but you could check it. If the line is swelling you loos presure to the slave cylinder and the slave can't push the yoke and the clutch won't open. Hope this helps.

The RX8 uses the same transmission as miatas of the same vintage - might be worth poking around miata.net to see if you can turn up any information. Other than the 5th and 6th gear synchro's being different from that used for 1st - 4th, I'm not well versed enough to provide anymore information. Best of luck.

Jay,

couple of questions...

Does this happen after the car warms up? How hot is the floor on the passenger side when it happens. How hot is the shifter.

One thing that can do this is heat. Things in the trans expand and things stick.

How old is the trans oil? I suggest changing that. If it is an 04, it could be 10 year old gear oil. I like redline MT 90. There are DIY's to help. Always loosen the top port first before you do the drain port.

Also, with an 04, the $100 thread in my sig is very useful.

Another source of heat is the CAT. It can bake the trans if it goes bad and you are in traffic. Or, at the track. Does the issue occur in stop and go traffic, or on the highway?

Gotta run.
