rx-8 automatic transmission fluid change

I am pretty new to the 8 as I recently purchased mine second hand in the first week of January. And I was wondering if anyone can help me identify if in fact that this in my automatic transmission fluid drain plug, as well as the feed and return lines for the radiator.

Drain plug to the trans pan?

Feed (red/hot) and Return (blue/cold)? Or vise versa?

Usually there is no drain plug.. Have to pull the pan. Not sure the case here.

I use an oil extractor to suck a few quarts out of my auto cars every year and replace. It is easy, and I do not spill my beer..

My car is used with about 113k miles and it shifts pretty rough in auto and with the shifter. I was hoping to chage the fluid to further diagnose any issues. Any other ideas?

Instead of removing the pan and just renewing that small amount of fluid, flush the tranny fluid.

except that disregards the filter, which can also cause issues if it is never replaced.

1. Remove the oil dipstick.

2. Loosen the oil pan mounting bolts.

3. Drain the ATF into a container.

4. Remove the oil pan and gasket.

5. Eliminate the sealant dust from the bolt hole.

6. Install the oil pan and a new gasket with new bolts.

Tightening torque
7.0-9.0 N·m {72-91 kgf·cm, 63-78 in·lbf}
7. Add the specified type of ATF through the oil filler tube until ATF level reaches lower notch of dipstick.

ATF type
ATF M-III or equivalent (e.g. DexronII)
Capacity (approx. quantity)
8.7 L {9.2 US qt, 7.7 lmp qt}
8. Verify that the ATF level is in the HOT (65 °C {149 °F}) range.

• Add ATF to the specified level if necessary.

Karack, you do know there is no filter in an RX8 Automatic ?
9k is spot on with the procedure, but, it still leaves a liter or 2 in the converter,which is why I suggested flushing the transmission.

I heard fluid specifically formulated for tiptroninc shifting should be used only (mazda m5 i think) is this true?

no, i didn't read through the FSM to find out. in which case it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to install one in the out line to the cooler. you could also have a shop add a drain bung to the pan while it is off if you go that route.

How much fluid did you put back it in? The whole transmission holds about 9 quarts. But only 3 quarts comes out when you pun the pan.
