New member and super proud member of a 2004 automatic RX8

Question?

Is it normal that during redlining, the system cuts off fuel at about 6.5K revs?

Is this a thing of automatic transmission Rx8?

No, your fuel cut should be at 7,500rpm actual, which is somewhere around 7,900 indicated. IF you are hitting a fuel cut at 6,500, something is wrong.

 

Is it properly warmed up when this happens ?

 

I think so. About 15 min drive on the expressway prior to attempting it.


What could it be?

I see the needle rise, slowly but surely to 6.5K then it drops on its own.

Anything else I could tell you to try to identify what could be wrong?

 

What year is your car? That will determine if it is a 4 port or a 6 port engine.

That means you have the lower power 4 port engine. The problem wouldn't be what I was thinking it could be.

 

But it means there is a problem nonetheless?

How long have you had the car (yrs & miles)? Have you removed and inspected the spark plugs?

 

I bought it a week ago 88K miles
I was planning to have it tuned up in about 500 miles after I bought it.
So if I inspected them what would be signs of health or trouble?

 

They should be clean. The porcelain, which is white when new, should be brown. If there is one with black or wet with fuel, you would have a bad coil, ignition wire and/or plug.
It would probably be a good idea to take the car to a major autoparts store (Auto Zone Advanced Auto) and get the ecu error codes read, if you don't have access to a reader. There are error codes that don't turn on a CEL (check engine light).

 

Cool. I'll check them out. Is this a known reason for a lower cutoff like I'm getting?

It does go up to 7.5K on neutral w/o cutting off
