Purchased rx8

Well, I went to take a look at an rx8 yesterday ad decided to purchase.
Needs some cosmetic work, but all in all, a good deal I think,

Love the way this thing drives!

I also recently bought my first 8. Just had it for two weeks and will never drive anything else (well except for my girl's g37x no choice). Only problem I have is the previous did a hack job for am exhaust. By that I mean I just today looked under the car to see what type of exhaust was on the car and found a magnaflow universal cat and from there back just custom fit pipes with No mufflers. My question is, is that a bad thing for my 8.

It's rude to high jack someone else's thread. Please either start your own thread, or search around the forums, as many answers can be found.
To answer your question- it's not bad for the car, but it's not good for those around you as the noise will be loud.

$3100. 116k.
Needs a heater core and needs some interior and a couple of exterior cosmetic pieces.

Overall I think a decent deal.

I plan on putting aside a week of evenings to get that dash out to do the heater core. I had to pull the dash to do the heater core in a 95 jetta I had--that took 2 solid days to get the dash out.

But on the other hand, I had to pull the dash to replace the carpet in my RX7. That only took 2 hrs. I'm hoping it's closer to the latter.

Nice

Plus you sound like a person that likes to work on their car.
LOL a extra bonus.

Coils my friend coils.
Owning an Rx7 you must be aware this....
And Catalytic is a problem with the 04-05
And of course compression ... but that's nothing a little N2O or Boost can't fix.

Hey wcs, that may be an exaggeration.
I assume you didn't mean to suggest that "a little N20 or Boost" can "fix" compression issues.
For the benefit of others reading this, I think you may have meant it can help performance of low compression engines?

flooding is a symptom of other issues.
If all things are healthy you won't flood the engine

Didn't know about the coils issue. Thanks for that. I *just* changed the coils on my 88 RX7 with close to 200k on them, (and they still work fine, just figured since had high miles, I'd do it before they started going bad) so I assumed Mazda's coils were pretty much bullet-proof.
Is the catalytic a prob with all 04 rx8's or are there certain symptoms I can keep an eye out for? Or would it be best to just assume the worst and replace it?

Rx8 coils are Def NOT bullet proof. Some have lasted 100k, but the majority tend to go bad around 25/30k. It's recommended to change plug/wires/coils at the same time, every 30k or so. Or get a tester and check up on them to make sure.

Cat failure is a result of unburned gas escaping the engine and clogging or destroying the cat. Poor ignition can lead to that. It's a cycle.

Have you read the new and potential owners thread? There you'll find many common issues/myths regarding the rx8

EDIT: Best way to verify if cat is healthy is to pull it down and look in with a flashlight.

Enormous amount of invaluable stuff there. I had already started making a list of stuff to check/do, but this is a virtual encyclopedia!! Also, didn't realize my car was part of the airbag recall. Good looks.

Coils replaced. Check!
Now, to purchase and replace the heater core. Not looking forward to that.
Im assuming this isn't a common job on these cars as I can't find any write-ups on removing the dash.

Yeah, usually flushes fix them.
I think it's an uncommon issue, I hardly ever see it discussed.
Found a somewhat helpful thread in the Australian Forum.

Welcome to the club! Post some pics of your new baby

Replacing the heater core in an RX-8, or any Mazda is a bitch. No known DIYs on this forum. My buddy harithac has experience on the matter. He might be able to help you out

BC-I just checked out that post on the aussie forum. Looks like the guy pulled the dash, and while replacing the heater core, found that there was a way to do it without pulling the dash..'Nope not at all, its a 5 minute job. Figure it out, after I took the whole dash board apart, and found out you can take out the heater core by itself without taking out the dash board and such.'

But then, no follow-up on how to do it. Gonna do some research--if I can figure out how, I'll definitely post it.
