It's cold as hell right now in Indiana, but I doubt that has anything to do with what's going on with my power steering. I've had troubles with it before where I went without power steering for 3 months, thinking it was the rack and pinion when it actually turned out to be the damn harness wire being corroded. After getting that replaced, my rx8 had been working wonderfully, until last night, It went out on me again. Like wt*. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

 

Corrosion travels, it might have been in more than the removable harness or it may just be corroded again, did you use dielectric grease?. Also check the the power steering noise filter located in the ECU box under the ECU

Yep, I installed a brand new harness and had issues less than a year later and I live where it never rains and my car is a garage queen. When I removed and stripped some of the stock wiring there was corrosion inside the wire. This time I rewired it myself using high quality 8AWG wire and commercial grade connectors, we shall see how it holds up.

 

damn this is bullshit, I swear mazda should have done a recall on this issue. Ill check what I can again, I bought this OEM harness just 2 months ago. I also made sure to use dielectric grease.

i used to get PS cutt-off on cornering or shaky steering wheel.

electric motors from the rack don't usually fail that easy, so i opened it up. the torque sensor was giving good readings, so i pull out the pinion linking the rack to the steer. the base which sits under the sensor seamed not right as it was hard to push down or pull up. i used a de-greaser liquid and removed the built sludge. place it back and mounted it to the RX. after that all my problems were gone.

 

i definitely need to either get a new harness and hope that works, or prey that a thorough cleaning works. sadly living in NE car work isn't possible in this weather

 

Where at in Indiana?
I might be able to lend a hand troubleshooting your issue.
