TN Power Steering Fail - All Simple Fixes Tried

To start, I have an '04 MT with only a few mods/upgrades done....Air filter upgraded to K&N, BHR style ignition (from what I can gather), upgraded starter, niche wheels...nothing fancy... just a decent 8.

First, I THINK I have tried all the easy fixes for this that I can find on here. I have went through all the connectors I could to check for corrosion or fouling as well as both ground points and all fuses. I have even went as far as to run a continuity check on the entire system leg by leg...took about 3 hours to do. Every single area came back with good readings. I have also used dielectric grease on all five connectors (the white on the negative line, the two gray intermediates and the two at the steering rack). I have tried clearing the codes via the right/left wheel move...still nothing.

What I have not done...

-Code Check via OBDII or dealer

-Voltage test of circuits...having the battery hooked up to an exposed pcm/esm case made me nervous

-Replaced any component

Sooo....

Any ideas? Any help or thought of a direction I could take at this point would help...am about to buy a new intermediate harness to see if that will do the trick but would love to solve this with out it.

Did.you check the connections at the control module end under the PCM?

That's where I ran the continuity tests from for some of that end of the system. I never disconnected those plugs though as the way they are routed I didn't see any way of them becoming loose or damaged.

It doesn't take much of a loss in connectivity for it to stop working.

It is almost always the CAN connections that cause the issues...so the smaller connectors.

Mine needed cleaning at the module...that's why I suggested it.

Also they don't look corroded at all...so spray the crap out of then with contact cleaner and plug them back together

For me changing all the screws that make ground and some connecting oil worked. You need to have special cutting screws that make good contact

Regards

dannobre,

okay so I tried using the contact cleaner and went ahead and did all the connections while I was at it. The only thing I didn't spray was the module male terminals or the noise filter male terminals. Everything else got a good and heavy dose then let dry and plugged...still no joy...also don't know if it makes a difference but the CEL is on at "on" position with key but once started it goes out after only a second delay. cant remember if that's normal or not.

TN Update

So, I am now completely lost. Just to make sure I did it all correctly the first time I did it all again... I cleaned every connection point in the harness and reassembled the whole thing...still no joy. Time for a new harness???

Likely some time with an iDS I'm afraid. You need to see of the module is talking to the rack and the ECU.

Did you check the power side fuse?
