Power Loss / Horrible Fuel Mileage / 02 ? MAF ?
Hey Guys,
I am new here as of today however, I have always searched the forums for info! Okay here is the issue.. Take a seat lol
I have a 2006 RX8 Base A/T. about 10 months ago I started experiencing some power loss issues (Mainly when it was Hot out [Houston, TX] and at lower speeds). I took it in after a while and was told that I had a misfire and needed to replace some coils, got the coils replaced and the car was fine for about 3 wks. I took it back and they stated I had another misfire... they replaced coils again. Got pissed with that shop and took it back to Mazda after issues continued. Mazda replaced MORE coils due to misfire and always stated that they could never "duplicate the issue". Well it ran good for a while and then took a crap on me again. I took it back to Mazda and at this point not only my power was crappy, but the gas mileage was HORRIBLE, Im talking 240 to tank... BAD! I cleaned the MAF after searching on here and it ran like brand new for about 4 wks, then took another crap with power and gas. I have told them (dealership) that it feels like my car isnt getting enough air and the problem HAS to be related to air coming in, because I cleaned the MAF and it helped a lot. I went to a different dealer and they claimed I just needed a new motor,in which they replaced under warranty (whew!). Well I get the new motor and it runs good for a while, but then sucks again. BTW, I NEVER drew a CEL, which sucks. Gas is sucking money out of my pocket and a 92 civic could beat me right now no problem. Since the MAF doesnt seem to be a problem, Im thinking maybe Front 02 Sensor? Please help, sorry for the long wind story.. Thanks guys... The dealers arent helping at all... Horrible fuel mileage, Horrible power,

Take your O2 SB Sir out and check your cat. A cat can cause a dramatic power loss. After u check it and clean the O2 sender reset the KAM so it isn't holding memory of the previous misfires
That's my best answer. We are all on a learning process with these cars good luck to you.

You keep noting coil replacement, but what about your wires and plugs? If the coils are working fine but the wires are shot, then the plugs still aren't getting the charge to spark. If the coils and wires are working fine but the plugs are shot, then they won't be sparking well.
Failing wires and plugs can also kill coils faster.
Then, don't forget about how the electrical current has to return to the battery/alternator after the spark. Check the engine block ground, remove it and clean both sides and re-secure it.
All this misfiring is probably destroying your cat, which will be soaking down power and gas mileage, and frying O2 sensors
You also may have your ESS fouled and needs to not only be cleaned off, but the profile needs to be reset.
There are more issues possible still, but start with these.
