Noob 04 Rx8 Guy
Picked up a 04 with 110k miles on it for a grand. Body is in good shape and overall nice ride. Never worked on a rotor motor before in my like but always liked they way they sound. Got a little bit of work to do to it. Mainly working out the rough idle. When you crank it cold it smokes but doesn’t smell like burnt oil, more or a smog smell. The rpm’s chop from I’d say from 1,200 down to 700. Then holds 1,500 and slowly down to a normal idle. Runes and drives nicely all the way to 6th with no problems. It picks up power around 6,500 rpm, idk if thats normal I figured it was but not %100. Then when you stop it does the choppy idle again and stalls most of the time. What could that be, hopefully it’s nothing crazy lol I’m good at most diy stuff so if it nothing serious I can handle it no problem. Other thing I noticed is the heater works but takes a long time for it to get hot. The car itself is up to temp but the heater still blows cold for a good 15 minuets. No clue on that lol. Oh and If anyone has a stock rim I need one cuz it’s got 1 different rim, looks like a mustang rim. Also being it’s got 110K what all should I go ahead and replace. It’s got plugs and wires already so it’s good there. Oh and the check engine light is on. Getting it checked Monday cuz I can’t get a tag on it till then. Let me know what ya think it would be much appreciated 👌🏻

Check that CEL for codes and get good, new OEM plugs, wires, and coils in her first.

Smoking turbo yay
S1 OEM wheels are fairly easy to find.
One thing about RX-8 is that it doesn't have anything like the "VTEC kicked in, yo" feeling. If you are doing some spirited driving, then you should be staying above 5k RPM.
Anyway, you also want to do a compression check and see if you need a new engine.
