LS2 Coils Starting Issue

I decided after watching the price on some OEM LS2 Coils to finally go ahead and purchase. I have been using the OEM RX8 coils, NGK wires, and the NGK plugs, and they had been working well however, since the price of the coils finally became manageable, I went ahead and bit the bullet. I bought some MSD sparkplug wires and and wiring harness on Ebay. At first I used the stock coil mount and bolted the LS2 coils to it, however the stock coil studs were in place. Once I got everything buttoned up, it took the car an extra couple revolutions to actually start. I drove it yesterday wondering if it would "fix itself" after getting warmed up and few miles on it, however it was even worse when warm.

Today, thinking there may have been a bit of arching between the stock coil mounting studs and the coils, so I made a bracket, reinstalled everything and still it acts as if the motor is low on compression, taking a couple extra revolutions to start.

I removed the spark plugs one by one to verify they were ok, and they were.

I have searched the forums, and have found a couple posts with issues but none of the posts have anything to do with starting. Once the car is started, it runs fine, and even idles better than with stock coils.

I am certain there isn't an issue with low compression, as the stock coils works fine, I just figured while I was on vacation I would install these to increase reliability.

Has anyone had issues with starting when installing the d585 coils?

Thanks,
Derrick

There are a few caveats with using OEM D585 coils that even some vendors will attest to.

First, the output of the coil should face upwards (if you held the coil sideways, harness end would be bottom left, coil output would be top right. I.e. how many RX8->Ls2 brackets are designed. Reason being because you risk arching to the block because of its strong ground reference.

Second, not all d585 are created equal. Remember that D585 refers to the "package" and not the internal design of the coil. What you will find is that some of the lower end D585 coils have weak transistors built in that significantly drop the spark energy the longer you crank.

Lastly, you will find that typically dwell values of the ECU will need to be adjusted to take full advantage of D585 coils. It wouldn't be drastic in the realm of starting, but for sure at the higher rpm band. Again, this all comes down to the quality of the coils you are using.

Do you have a picture of said D585 coils? Do they start with a "HK" serial number by chance?

The output does face upwards. The harness is at the bottom left.

From what I understand while reading other post, just as you stated it seems the dwell would come more into effect at the higher rpms.

I don't have a picture at this moment as the coils are still on the car. (I plan to remove them tomorrow so the car is driveable) and i will take a picture then.

The coils I purchased have the letters BSC before some numbers, only thing I can make out while still installed.

Thanks for the help.
