The list of problems
Hey guys and gals, I've had my 8 for 5 years now. I've taken very delicate care of her. My 8 has been through one engine at 91012 miles (yeah I kept track!) Anyways. I've been having some issues over the past view months that I just can't resolve. Here is the list
1) A/C: Blows cool air from far left vent, hot from The middle two and the far right vent. Blows hot on defrost and on the feet. Compressor clutch engages and disengages when turned off and on respectively. I have never touched the A/C system.
2) Gear shifter gets pretty hot after driving. I can also smell transmission fluid. I checked the tranny, no leaks...
3) the idle... Dear God... Cold, idles up fine. I have a air pump delete with the block off plate installed. Once the car warms up she will sit at 850 rpm, then randomly drop to 700-500, and sometimes she dies. After driving is the worst. During me writing this it has died twice now.
4) Security System: if I lock the car.. it will wait about 5 mins, then go off... Honestly don't know what voodoo things are happening with that.
If anyone can give me a hand. That would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

2) How is your catalytic converter? If it's damaged/clogged everything around it will get pretty toasty. Feel the passenger side floor to see if it's as hot. If it is, the cat is in trouble. If it's not, it's the trans overheating for some odd reason. But that would be very strange.
3) Get an OBD reader and look at your short term and long term fuel trims while it idles. They should be zero. If they're super high you have a vacuum leak, which you'll need to trace and fix. Easy. If the trims are OK things get a little more serious.
Do you have difficulty restarting it when it dies?
so
4) I'm thinking the hood sensor has a poor connection, but could be wrong. Is it always exactly the same amount of time after locking or different but around 5 minutes?

3) I'll get the trims checked, it takes a little longer but only by about two seconds.
4) I have fixed this problem, it was the hood sensor giving me problems

1)When you say there is a little bit of cold air from one vent, how cold is it? I'd have someone check the A/C system. You could be low on refrigerant. Just a guess here.
2)When was the transmission fluid last replaced? I am assuming you have a 6-speed here. I mean, I know most RX-8s are stick shifts, but this is not Viper or S2k where MT was the only option.
If you have the OEM exhaust manifold, heat shouldn't be a problem. Wrapping the header can have some unexpected results, as it can trap the heat inside the header.
3)Check around for vacuum leaks first. Sometimes the VFAD hose can come loose and make the idle funky.
