Induction Kit

Hi Guys,

iv been coming on this site now for over 6 months but never signed up, so today is the day I did.. and all for a good reason.

I need a question answered.

I purchased my RX8 2004 231 7 months ago, it came with a aftermarket induction kit, the kit comes from the air intake and down towards the bottom of the engine and the cone filter is situated right behind the grill.. now my question is...

Am I loosing power?.. would I be better off with a standard induction?

iv heard that the after market inductions kits are useless for any power gains unless you spend mega ££££.. I have the resource to pick up a standard induction tonight, what do you guys think

thanks a lot

Your description doesn't really make any sense. I recommend taking a picture of what you have and uploading it. We can usually identify the brand immediately from a picture.

Hi sorry for being vague..

I have no picture unfortunately..

But it looks pretty straight forward: A cone filter behind my grill then leads back up into the engine through one pipe (has the sensor attached also)

I just need to know if something that looks pretty straight forward would be loosing me power, are the original induction kit the best?

But ... can you take a pic and upload it? or do a google image search for "RX-8 intake" and find one that looks the same?

It's like trying to describe which car you have only using a few words: "It has 3 wheels, a body that is kind of shorter in the front and back, taller in the middle, with curves on the body panels."

You could be describing many different brands all at the same time.

Until we know which one you have, we won't know how it's performance stacks up.

AEM is the brand.

This is similar to you posting a picture of your car and we tell you that you have an RX-8, and you ask how we can tell. Or identifying someone from a picture of their face rather than a description of their height, weight, gender, and hair color.

Because that's what it is?

It's the design, the shape, the colors, the placement, etc... The AEM and Mazdaspeed are the same (just different logos may be present), but no other intake is quite like it.

The UK's dyno tests are done wierd (as far as the US dynos are concerned), so I have no idea what to tell you.

In the US, we look for a wheel horsepower number, which is always lower than the manufacturer's crank horsepower number, because the drivetrain losses will impact the number.

The UK seems to try to reverse back up into the crankshaft number, and I don't think they do it very accurately. They do it consistently, but not accurately.

If you get a whp number, it should be in the 190-200whp range, which would put the engine's number around 230bhp.

And this number is if EVERYTHING is healthy. Old ignition is a ~30whp loss, for example. Low compression will also hurt things, as will a clogging cat, fouled ESS, fouled MAF, fuel trims out of wack, O2 sensor problems, vacuum leaks, grounding problems, etc...

Most RX-8s driving around are unhealthy in at least one way, and their owner's don't know it.

Thanks for the info, it's really interesting.

I'll have to ask the guy how he's measuring the power. Hopefully I'm getting over 200 bhp. My car feels fast though. And I know it's faster than the rx8 ' s in my town as iv raced most of them haha.

Most new owner's have NO idea of how fast a healthy RX-8 should feel. We constantly get new owners that love how fast their 8 is, then they post a question about a problem they are seeing, replace ignition or something, and are blown away by the difference and the pickup.

We see it literally all the time.

That's a bit of a better guide, but also shows how radically different (although still subtle to it's owner) a given RX-8 can behave if not maintained properly.
