Idle/ Stall Issue. Opinions

Hi guys,

I'm new to rx8club
I recently bought a used 2004 mazda rx 08. Got it for a great deal with 94k miles. I bought the car with two issues. Needs replacement fuel pump seals that from what I researched prior to buying the car should be covered by warranty and it also needed a replacement Air pump. When bought it drove great and idled great. The guy I bought it from recently changed spark plugs and coils. I called mazda to have a compression test performed and to fix gas leak.

Yesterday I bought a used working Air Pump from an 05 mazda rx that was being parted out.
I disconnected the battery for this install. Since then the car has had a rough idle and would stall when engine got warm. Previously there were NO issues of this before I installed the air pump.

I have done an ecu reset and did the gas pedal 20 times while car was on ON. Let it idle and have Co.eted about two drive cycles now.

My problem is that after idling when I drive the car, o ce I drive the car and stop the car will start to idle rough and not hold idle and then stall.

Any ideas? The air intake and maf sensors were not touched or changed. Do I need to complete more drive cycles or are there other issues? Currently have no cel throwing and since I fixed the air pump the code for that actually went away.

Thanks

To clarify this was the secondary air injection pump I replaced.

I got a 04 with 85k on it. I bought it knowing it had low compression.

Just rebuilt the engine. I had rough idle and hard time starting hot.

Wise to get the compression test.

Does it start easily when engine is hot ?

Thank you

I am having the cars compression tested on Wednesday. The thing is when I bought the car, for about two days it ran great however I am in NY and it cannot pass emissions tests if I did not replace the secodary air injection pump. Yesterday I replaced the pump, connected battery, it reset the clock. The car idled for about 5 minutes to warm up but I had to turn off the engine because I had to go run some errands. I came back and let the car warm up and drove it around but it idled pretty hard. I received a CEL that it was idling below normal, which I cleared.

Do you really think this is a compression issue. The car was running great prior. I think it could be coils or plugs but the previous owner said he replaced them in August. I'm not sure if he used cheap parts... do you think i should replace the coil and plugs too?

update: Today I reset the ECU, and it has been idling decently however stalled on my twice after driving it around. It starts and idles, after driving for like 10-15 minutes if i stop suddenly and put the car into neutral at a light sometimes it will stall. Other times it dips down to about 500rpm then corrects itself. Do you think it's still adjusting to fuel trim?

Ah if it starts fine hot may not be compression. I have 4 Tacoma's and anytime I reset computer it has to relearn and idles rough until then. Usually about 20 min driving about 45 mph+ and rough idle goes away.

Thanks you for the information. I'm still going to check Compression on Wednesday but I drove it around yesterday and today and I think it was an idle relearn but it hasn't stalled and has been steadily idling at 750-800rpms now.

I did throw code p0456. Small evap leak. I think it may be the gas cap but I am bringing it to Mazda service on Wednesday to look at the gas leaking from the fuel pump. This is a photo of where it's leaking. Should I replace the gas cap or do you think this is related to the leaking gas.

If it's leaking gas you should check fuel pressure. I believe normal idle is 850+

Gas cap usually fixes it but it can also be the purge control valve under the upper intake manifold.
